When my mom starts up her computer, Windows Explorer opens to c:\Programs\Common. It just starting doing this a few days ago. Any ideas why or how to stop it?

It happens just on startup and doesn't come back if closed. When you start up the computer again, it pops back up.

In the explorer window, go to Tools / Options / View tab / uncheck Restore previous folder windows at logon.

Anything in the start up folder?

Is there a value in this registry key?
To resolve this issue, delete the DesktopProcess value from the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

    Also check this:
Go to Start/Run/win.ini and delete any command after Run= . Then Save As as you leave notepad.

Go to START>SETTINGS>TASKBAR AND START MENU
On here use the tabs at teh top and go to the START MENU
In Here Click on the ADVANCED button
Now you can navigate to the PROGRAMS which are under the START MENU that is highlighted, One of the folders is labeled START UP.

It is possible that you will find Explorer in theat folder which means it will start when windows starts,

If there are other users of your PC then there will be other start up folders for them in exactly the same layout as the one you have just navigated through.

Have a look at each of them just in case.

    Is taskmgr running c:\Programs\Common ....?

Nothing in the Start Up folder, no other users and taskmgr is not running it either.

You can control what Folders windows Explorer opens up, by amending the default.

Some examples; Note the spaces in between commands.

    C:\windows\explorer.exe /n, /e, c:
will open up all drives, but with an expanded c: drive showing all Folders within C:

    C:\windows\explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, c:\
will open up showing all drives but with a collapsed C drive

    C:\windows\explorer.exe
with no arguments will open up into My Documents folder.
This is the default that XP installs :p
and was the first thing I banished when installing XP Pro.

You should be able to modify your Windows Explorer shortcut by right clicking on it, selecting Properties, and loading whatever argument (from above) that you like.

I actually have 2 shortcuts. One to an Expanded C; drive, called Explorer.;)

The other I have called MyExplorer, and it opens up with the collapsed C; drive version above.

My Documents shortcut opens up into My Documents (duh) as it should. :D
    Hope this helps. Bazza

Sorry, but I'm a little confused by your answer. Explorer opens on it's own when the computer starts. We want to stop that, not have it open to something else. What command would I use to stop it from opening on start up?

explorer.exe is required to be able to run Windows, as you probably know.
Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click on the Processes tab will show it there.
As to why it appears when you startup I suggest that you try TimW's suggestions.
Sorry I cannot assist further. Bazza

Look at these registry values and see if explorer is listed :
Two main locations exist in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The Data field lists the program and its associated information. You may right-click on any program and choose delete to prevent it from executing at startup.
