    I need a real expert please! having posted at some lesser forums I could find no one who could offer any help other than connecting this computer to someone elses computer in order to download spyware removal programs. I simply do not have access to anyone elses computer at this time & am hoping that perhaps there is a way to repair the computer enough manually so that I can then go ahead and download the necessary programs.

    The following is the sequence of events leading up to this problem;
    My girlfriends laptop is a Sony Vaio with Windows XP & it kept having the small window pop up stating that there was not enough disk space- following that she said that a window popped up stating again that there was not enough disk space and would she like to clean up the computer to free up more space- she said that she clicked- Yes! That is when the real trouble began. When she turned on her computer the next time everything was gone the whole desktop except major programs like Explorer as well as all the Documents were apparantly gone. Her biggest problem was that Outlook express seems to be completely gone as well along with all the history some of which was very important. I could not even find Outlook Express in her list of hardware. And even after all of this the computer still had the mini window pop up saying that there was not enough disk space- I went through and deleted every unused and unnecessary programs that I could find- however when I tried to download new programs for virus and spyware removal the computer would not let me download them. Then I found out that it will no longer let me download anything at all. Therefore I am convinced that there must be some kind of malware at work- Is there any way that we can manually go in, perhaps in Safe Mode or some other way to begin reclaiming the system and hopefully recovering the lost documents and programs. If it is possible to clean it up enough to actually enable some downloads that would be great! Also I have a side question for someone who knows- this lap top shows that there is a "D" drive with I believe another 10MB of unused space- and since the "C" drive is clearly full how does one begin using or accessing the additional space?
    Thanks in advance for all your help guys! (or gals!) :)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    You will need to get access to another computer and download the necessary files and then burn them to a CD. Then you can copy to this problem system and run the tools. If this does not fix the ability to connect to the internet, you will have to figure out a way to get the logs back to us. Like either burn them back to a CD or copy to a flash drive....etc.

    Without getting some logs that give us a lot more info, we cannot properly diagnose the problems to decide what to do next. We do not even know if the problems are due to malware.

    Did you check to see how much disk space is free? Sounds to me like this may have been a valid problem and the popup was just from Windows telling you that diskspace is low.

    It is most likely just a factory partition and 10 MB is not enought drive space to worry about. One download from the internet of an antispyware removal program would almost use all of that up.
