Whilst following the guide the following occurred also.

Didn't know what viruses I had so didn't use Special Removal Tools at this point

Uninstalled Viewpoint Media Player using add/remove programs

Had trouble restarting in safe mode for both accounts especially the non-adminstrator account. But was eventually able to run ccleaner and spybot on both

I was unable to run counterspy on both accounts in safe mode and only ran on administrator in safe mode. Ran counterspy in normal mode on the other account

Had to run bitedefender twice as the web browser closed down 3/4 the way through completion the first time. Ran Panda active scan twice as well as the web browser also closed down half way through on both occassions. Hence I just went onto the next step and did not run Panda active scan through to completion. These were both done in normal mode as unable to run in safemode with networking.

I know used the special removal tool for Virtumonde aka Winfixer successfully.

    Logs are now attached.

    Thanks heaps.

Run CCleaner (Still a lot of crap in the temp files).

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03"
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_09"
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_11
    Search Assist

    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

    Please attach new logs for:
    ShowNew
    GetRun
    HJT
    Avenger

    Cheers Tim,

Quick question. I am doing online study through a university that uses a previous version of Java (the one I have installed) and when I install the newer version it is not compatable. Is it ok just to stay with the older version otherwise I can't work from their website?

Did everything else though. Couldn't find the entries to remove from HJT so just moved onto the other steps.

    Logs attached.

    Thanks Heaps for your help!!

HJT was not renamed ...it needs to be renamed to analyse.
    Search assist was not uninstalled.
You need to talk to the school ...the old Java versions are subject to exploits.

    Download this file - Combofix.exe
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Sorry, I did rename it but when I used it I just used it from the start menu. I used the renamed version this time.

Uninstalled Search Assist. Totally missed that when I was thinking about the Java problem.

Done everything else and logs attached.

    Thanks again.

I've also started using Mozilla as recommended and it takes a little getting used to but seems better. Thanks.

Are you having problems with the fixes? Are you doing the Registry fix? I ask because they are continuing to appear. Let's try again ...make sure you do not have any active AV or anti-spyware running that may prevent the fix (do you get any messages when you run them?).

    Avenger

Nope not having any problems with the fixes. I'm doing the registry fix, but I did remove the fixME.reg file from the desktop after running it. Is that ok to do or should it stay on the desktop?

I don't get any messages when running the fixes either.

This time I also got a text file appear on the desktop following running avenger. It is also attached. Can I remove this or should it stay on the desktop? This hasn't happened before.

    Cheers Tim.

Yes you can remove the avenger text file on the desktop.

I do not know why avenger ran in post #7 but didn't run successfully in the last post.

Use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\iun6002.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vfuepxtw.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pevvvmgf.dll

If you are unable to delete them...download - Pocket KillBox

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:

    * Delete on Reboot
    * then Click on the All Files button.*(or on the folders option)*
    * Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
    * Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    * Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.

If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.
    Attach a new log for:
    ShowNew

All deleted. Didn't need to run killbox. I rebooted as well just to make sure.

Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including Counterspy).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
