hey guys, I was hoping I would never have to post in this forum, but programs keep freezing up on me and I am having some trouble with very slow Internet use. Plus the presence of the word trojan on my Bitdefender scan. when you get time, will you please look over my scan file and lend a hand? thanks sorry, I forgot to mention that I followed all of the steps to the best of my knowledge in the read and run me first sticky

Hi A'sfan.:) You need to attach a hijack this log also. Note: Please use the 'manage attachments' button to upload attachments (per the tutorial) rather than the paperclip. There is a glitch with the vb software that logs us out of the system when we try to view attachments that have been uploaded using the paperclip method. Thanks!:)

    7: HijackThis log posting

Since so many new problems end in requiring a Hijack This! log anyway, it will be okay to post a HijackThis log if you are still having problems. But only if you have completed all the above steps and you must attach your log to your message. See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your PostAlso you must install HijackThis properly per the instructions in the below link. Depending of your OS, you may need an application like WinZip to extract hijackthis.exe from the downloaded ZIP file.

Empty your Recycle Bin and then make sure you also empty the Norton Nprotect folder.
See the below which should help you to get it emptied:

Emptying the Norton Protected Recycle Bin

Now also empty your Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine folder.

I only see a few minor things in your logs (besides the above). Your problems may not be malware, but rather bad or corrupt drivers or system files or it could be hardware problems (like heat or defective motherboard components).

Is the below your desired start page?
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://drudgereport.com/

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

thanks for responding. My recycle bin was empty when I did all the scans and so forth, or at least it didn't give me an option to empty it. When I tried to empty the norton nprotect folder, there was no icon that I can find, and so I used the command prompt method, and it said something like the file or folder could not be located. So that didn't get done. The norton anti-virus\quarantine folder shows that there is nothing in there, but when I access norton anti-virus through the program files and double click on it, it brings up the quarantine folder, and there are two zipped items in that. This is not what you want me to delete is it? The only reason I can think of the bitdefender report showing that there are items in the quarantine folder is maybe when I had norton anti-virus '03 or '04 there may have been quarantined items that didn't get deleted when I upgraded to my current version. I do not know how to find these files or folders. Since I basically couldn't accomplish any of the first three things you asked me to do, do you still want me to run HijackThis right now? Sorry I'm being difficult, but I'm not meaning to be:rolleyes:

Instead of the below that they give you:
Use my cmd instead of command

    Does that help?

Yes. Delete them. If you cannot find the option in the Norton programs themselves just navigate to the folders yourself manually and delete the files. You will see the folder names in the logs you have posted.

Complete all the other steps no matter what.

No, I did try typing cmd and command and neither worked, sorry, I should have said that. I could not figure out how to get that to work. As far as the folders are concerned, consider them deleted:) Yes, that is my startpage, but if you guys keep fixing my problems on my computer at the rate that you are, I will have to change it to majorgeeks.com!! I will post the new HJT log tommorrow, thanks again

here is the new HJT log and I reset my web settings, deleted quarantined items, deleted items you told me to on HJT, but I still can't clear out the Norton Nprotect folder.

Your HJT log is clean! As far as Nprotect is concerned:
    1) if you right click on the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop do you see any options related to Nprotect

    2) if no to the above, double click on the Recycle Bin icon and now look under the menu options (start with File) to see if there are any options for Nprotect.

I don't use Norton so I cannot say exactly how they hook this feature (which I find to be very annoying and most people do not use or realize that it is storing tons of stuff, like malware, on their PCs).

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:
