Well, I puckered up and upgraded my HD4870 to a spankin new Powercolor HD6970 . (Running Phenom 2 x4 940 @ 3.0 Ghz) . The performance increase is amazing. So much so that I was easily able to win some games I previously couldnt, apparently due to stuttering and slow framerates. I hadn't even thought of that aspect of upgrading my GPU.
Point being (besides bragging about my new GPU) I'm a big racing game fanatic, I love the Flat Out series for it's super fun, arcade-style smash-em-up action, to Shift 2 Unleashed, which is more of a simulator style - not as rollicking fun as Flat Out, but certainly fun in it's own right and very challenging and difficult .
Any other racing game fans out there ? What racing games are you playing ?

The Nascar series is always fun if you're into the circle-track type racing. A 43-car parking lot at 185Mph is always fun if you're using a wheel and pedal setup.

Need For Speed Carbon has been a favorite of mine since it was first released as well.

Would be nice if Microsoft would release a windows version of Forza Motorsport, I dont see why they haven't.

Oh I didn't mention, I only have a logitech gamepad, no steering wheel/pedal setup.
I don;t think ive tried any of the Need For Speed series, I have all the Flat Out's, Shift 2 Unleashed, Grid, and Bunout Paradise Ultimate box set. I spend most of gaming time playing Flat Out UC and Shift 2 .
Local Game Stops and Fry's never really have many racing games, so I guess maybe some online research followed by an Amazon search once I've found one I think i might like may be a good approach .

IMO, NASCAR Racing 2003 Season (Papyrus/Sierra) was the best racing sim ever created. Don't let the '2003' fool you - there is still a very strong mod base, with conversions for the Car Of Tomorrow (or, as it's now named: the Car Of Today).

Having problems running it on a Win 7 64-bit machine, though - runs great on XP 32-bit platforms.

Hmmm, I have the retail, un-modded version of that in a box somewhere. Now you've got me intersted in some new add-ons :)

Yeah, but a good disk is worth it - I've had mine for 7-8 years, never a hitch.

A couple of good mod sites for NR2003: MasGrafx and Team SBR.

Not sure if i can see myself paying that much for a USED game . . . If they are going for that much USED, seems like the company could produce batches of new ones .
    Heck, a 2011 version for PS3 doesn't even cost as much !

Geez. Of course, I would NEVER consider torrenting a PIRATED version, but if I WERE that type of person, this would be the type of situation that would tempt me to do so, but I wont do it . Since I'm not that type of person .

I ordered one thing from Ebay one time, and got ripped off. I will never order from Ebay again . Shame Papyrus/Sierra doesn't offer it for download at a reasonable price. Guess they are out of business . I'm certainly not paying $70 for an 8 year old game .

have you tried split second and blur?

  14. FED UP

No i havent tried those. I've heard Blur is good, aren't there "power ups" in Blur ?
I dont think ive even heard of split second . Ill have to check it out .

  15. Martien

    Martien Private E-2

they are a little bit the same, with blur you have powerups and split second also but you use more the environment.
something like a gas trailer you blow up, etc
slpit second i have myself so i know that one much better.

Thats what I love about the FLAT OUT series, your entire environment is destructible . Some of the race tracks involve driving 100 MPH through the glass facade of shopping malls, and you can find shortcuts by smashing through barn doors etc. With Flat Out, I don't really care if I win or lose the race, its fun either way. Shift 2, however, is a much more precise type of play, and you have to be consistent every lap, or you lose. It just "feels" like more of a simulation, while FLAT OUT "feels" like an arcade game .
I havent played any racing game with powerups, not sure how I would feel about that , I want to try it and see (Blur).
And Split Second sounds like something I should check out as well .

If you are getting into racing sims and if you buy a wheel and want 'about' the most realistic experience then GT Legends, GTR and GTR2 as well as race07 and Evo is about the best you will get. Shift & Shift 2 are more arcade but still fun!

I enjoy arcade style more. I really don't see myself buying steering wheel/pedals . The closer a game gets to an actual simulation, the more serious I take it, which, in turn, causes me to get angry when i mess up, which is VERY common, even on Shift 2 .
I want to keep things lighthearted and fun . I like to play games, not operate simulators .
    Does that make sense ?

    Hey FED UP!

Hardcore Nascar 2003 guy here. It's the only sim/game for me. Tried em all, but the physics engine in N'03 floats my boat. Haven't tried iRacing yet -- too fa$t4me.

Sim Racing Design is a great resource for PC racers. Need a bit of a thick skin tho imo.

Personally don't think you would be shady in just borrowing a disc (generic key code is available) and enjoying N'03. Hear you on paying $70 to $100+ for an almost decade old game. Nobody is losing money, that has right, if you play the sim. Understand that developers don't want you messing with their exe file, so certain mods may be less than honorable. Like plagiarizing Imagine, as apposed to listening to a John Lennon recording. Applaud your values tho. Might be able to trade a game, you're not fond of, for the loan of an N'03 disc-- for the time it takes to install. Service pack update/No CD patch/BoogittyBoogitty!

I can't really afford a G27 Logitech, but my Momo doesn't degrade the fun factor -- different strokes :). I actually purchased a G25 -- and returned it -- I didn't like the quality. Might be able to purchase a Momo, on Kijiji, for $50+/-. Have to recommend giving one a try.

Congrat's on the new gpu, a 6970 will let you run it like you stole it. Curious about your PSU...

    Enjoy your gpu enhanced crashes!

    's all good

I have an 850 watt Thermaltake PSU . Does the job quite nicely .
Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with Nascar 2003. I still have fun with Flat Out . I wish I could try out Nascar 2003 before buying a copy-assuming I found one that was reasonably priced. I think that the physics engine in Flat Out is more realistic than Shift 2 - if you flip you car in Shift 2, you get a generic car flipping scene that doesn't match the speed you were driving when you flip, and the underside of the cars are just flat panels, whil in Flatout, everything is much more realistic. In all, I think that Flat Out UC is simply the best and most fun racing game that >> I << have played on the PC.
The makers of Nascar 2003 MUST be out of business, as if they saw how much the old, used versions of their game is selling for, they would most certainly want to cash in on it. I could do some research and see what happened to the dev team/company .
Oh, also, having a game pad makes some of the cars on Shift 2 nearly impossible to drive, because your throttle has to be either off completely or on 100% . Kinda frustrating, but I just cant afford and don't really have room for a steering wheel/pedal setup .
Thanks again for your input !
    START YOUR ENGINES ! !

Oh man do it. Its the third Flat Out - there is Flat Out, Flat Out 2 and Flat Out UC . UC uses new polygons, more damage polygons, the entire environment is destructible. I just LOVE that game, and with Windows Live, there are still enough people playing it that you can get racing with other people with a few minutes.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Dirt 3.... great to play online, I love it, rallycross particularly, but also does rallying of course...

Some real fun multiplayer kinda "party" modes too, a definite laugh, and some good solid physics behind it. Gymkhana is pretty cool too (though some racing purists hate it ;) )

I have Dirt 2, and I just didn't care much for it. Maybe I'll re-install it and give it another shot with my new GPU .

I just spent a while downloading and installing Need For Speed World per TAZZtazz77 .
After all the downloading, installing etc. I finally started the game and - - - nothing .
A black screen .. Upon reviewing the readme file, I see that it does not support the HD6970 ! ! :confused
It supports all sorts of lesser cards, but the 69 series is not supported. All I get is a black screen and my system locks up .
    At least I tried !
