I am new to wireless and have read both opinions about disabling the SSID broadcast. Are there any issues associated with just turning the router off when the network is not in use? Seems that limiting the time the network is vulnerable is better than letting it broadcast 24/7.

Just disable the SSID broadcast, its the better way to go. Turning the router on and off alot will just speed up failure. If you do not, it would be easy for someone to get in. Use WEP and disable SSID is the way to go. Its NOT fullproof but will at least be better than wide open.
