Default weird problem with CRT monitor

hey everybody. i have a samsung syncmaster 997. its a 19in CRT monitor. i got it in july i think from circuit city. if it matters, i have a radeon 9800 pro video card to go with it. and im on xp w/ sp2.

lately iv been having some problems with my monitor.

1. every now and then, the monitor will randomly do the degaussing thing, on its own. there has to be a better term for it, but thats all i can think of. it does this when im looking online using firefox, in "my computer", even when playing games like ut2k4 or rise of nations.

2. the other problem is occasionally i will be able to see slight flickering in areas of the screen that are a solid color, usually white, like when in my computer or in an instant messenging box. it only lasts for a few seconds, if i turn the monitor off, and then turn it back on after 10-15 seconds its gone once the screen reappears.

my brother told me to turn my refresh rate all the way up, and it was already set on the highest, which was 70. the only other option was 60 hertz. i have it on 32 bit color quality, 1600x1200 pixels, and 96 DPI

any one know what could be causing this? it kindof annoys me that a generally brand new monitor is already acting screwy.

Just a though...make sure you don't have any magnets close to it or your computer....

Yeah, a phone on top, makes it turn several pretty colors. *grins*

I've had some of those as well, it seems to be common in older monitors, I've learned to live with it.

im pretty sure i dont now. closest i can see is a couple of the small creative speakers, but theyre a good 6+ inches below it. when i first moved into my dorm room, i had the small center speaker sitting on top of the monitor, could it have done some sort of irreversible damage to the screen?

The degausing on its own would definitely indicate something metal is too close to it. Take everything into account.

Also, the warranty on monitors are usually pretty good, if you got it in July, you may just want to have Samsung replace it.

also, do you think power surges could be doing anything? right now everything (monitor, cpu, 5.1 speakers, and a small desklamp) are all on the same surge protector, but could that be at fault? i think i bought this surge protecter in the summer of 03 before school started, maybe i need a newer high speed one like this http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...C-PRICEGRABBER

edit// wait, something metal? i thought it was just magnets that screwed with monitors

I don't think it is a power issue.

i found something online saying that alot of newer CRT monitors dont have a degaussing option in their internal menu, so they automatically do it. buuuuut i actually have an option for that, and iv looked through every section in the menu and everywhere on the samsung website and there wasnt a thing about automatically degaussing

Are you using the correct driver for the montior? With the monitor I'm using now, if I allow it to use the Windoze driver, I get alot of artifacts & the little white "sprites" you mentioned on the screen. When I have the "Original Monitor Driver" installed I don't any of those issues. If you didn't recieve the driver on a cd with the monitor, you can download it from the Samsung site. There are two different models of your monitor, so have your exact model number handy. :D

best of luck to yas.

you should also make sure your speakers are magnetically shielded or not. Your speakers are most likely magnetically shielded if they are computer speakers.

It's unlikley but the degaussing circuit may have gone nuts. I know I used to have this problem with a TV I had an age ago... normally it would degauss on every power on.. presumably this monitor has some sort out gauss meter to detect magnetic field differences so it knows when to degauss.

But anyway... it could be a power issue, but it all depends on how its put together. Like I said, its unlikley, but if the power supply is dishing out uneven power, might cause the gauss meter to report a false change in magnetic field (since the wires around it will be causing an unbalanced field if the power is uneven).

I would see if you can get a replacement... but thats just me

Tell them you didn't do anything, it started doing weird things on its own.
