This is my first post..one of the big boys at cnet sent me here. I have a 2 year old Gateway, WinXP with a GTW V92 Voicemodem. I'm connecting at 16.8 or 19.6 at best. Sometimes I get up to 21kbs but not in the last few days. My isp tech thought I needed a modem driver update. The moderator at cnet thinks it's more likely spyware. So he sent me here. I have done all the preliminary downloading and running the things suggested by Major Attitude and I downloaded hijackthis and ran that and saved a copy of the log. Will you please suggest what I can do next? Thanks

If you are saying you ran all the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal and you still have a problem then you should read the tutorial in this Sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis as a .txt file attachment to your message. All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail, items in the tray, anything you can close... Close before running Hijack This!

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder or choose run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

However, if you are having problems with connect rates, it is more than likely a problem with noise on your phone line or potentially a mismatch in configuration settings on you modem and the one you are connecting to. Malware does not normally affect connect rates but it can affect download speeds and overall PC performance.

Oh, darn, maybe I've done all the wrong things already. I downloaded Hijackthis and I saved the log. I don't know if my browser was open or not. Perhaps I'm in over my head.

It's not a big deal Doris. Just exit all browser sessions and run HijackThis again. But make sure you save the file to a .txt file rather than a .log file or you will not be able to upload it as an attachment.

Ok, I'll give it another try later this evening. Thanks for the encouragement.

    Hi,

Don't sound like spyware to me either, couple easy suggestions.
Try replacing line from computer to wall/surge protecter
Try bypass of surge protecter, but only temporarily
    Plug line into different outlet.
Do you have any problem with your phone? ( clicking, buzzing)
How old are your phone lines?

    Rick
