Hi recently my computer has been very laggy and my cable modem also. I tried power cycling my router and modem but internet is still slow. Was wondering if the hijack log will help. I appreciate any help. Thanks

Please read the announcement and sticky threads. HJT logs should only be posted when requested and then they must be attachments to your message. You also must run the READ ME FIRST cleanup first and you must use the proper version of HJT. Yours is very old. Please run the steps below.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem, boot into normal mode and make sure you follow these directions:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Hi sorry about posting my Hijack log before it being requested and thanks for the quick reply. Well I ran all the steps in the 'READ ME FIRST...' and this is what happened. When I booted into safe mode there was only a black screen with the words safe mode but nothing else so I couldn't run any programs there. So I instead ran the scans on normal mode.
When I ran Adaware it froze but told me there was one critical object.

When I ran Spybot it said
Error during check!: Common hijacker (Datei C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts kann nicht geƶffnet werden. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process) ()
Congratulations!: No immediate threats were found. ()

When I ran McAfee Stinger it found W32/Sdbot.worm.gen

The other programs didn't find anything. I also couldn't run the online scanners. After I ran all the scans, I am still getting pop-ups about downloading Winfixer and my internet is still very slow for a cable modem. Here is my Hijack log if it helps. Thanks.

Why couldn't you run the online scanners? What problems did you have? Did you use Internet Explorer as specified in the READ ME?

Is the below ProxyServer setting something you added to your system?
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = proxy1:8080

Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
On the page that opens, scroll down to CWShredder Service ... right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    CWShredder Service

Now exit HJT and do not reboot if it asks you to do so. We will reboot later.

You main problem is a Virtumundo infection. Follow the steps below to fix it.

Please make sure System Restore is OFF and the Viewing of Hidden Files & Folders is Enabled as per the tutorial.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode with no networking and DO NOT RUN any browsers while doing these steps.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
    • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
    • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
    • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
    • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at. Iit should look like this
    • At this point press enter one time.
    • Next you will see:
    • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\awvtu.dll

    • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
    • Next you will see:
    • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\utvwa.*

    • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
    • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
    • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtu.dll
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: awvtu - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtu.dll

    • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
    • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
    • Now please attach a new HJT log from normal mode.

Thanks for replying. Well I'm having a problem running into safe mode. After I click safe mode it goes to my desktop except it's black with nothing on it. It's just a blank screen. Do you know what the problem is? Thanks.

When you get into safe mode, try the below.

Press CTRL-SHIFT-ESC at the same time to bring up Task Manager. If that works, do the below.
Click File, New Task (Run...) and enter explorer.exe in the box and click okay. See if either your Desktop appears or a Windows Explorer window opens up. If either of these occur, you should now be able to navigate your way to the KillVundo.bat file to run it.

    Let me know what happens.

    Virtumundo is now fixed.

How do you connect to the internet (dial-up, DSL, cable...etc)?
    Who is your ISP?

Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
On the page that opens, scroll down to ISEXEng ... Then right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'.

    ISEXEng

Now exit HJT and do not reboot if it asks you to do so. We will reboot later.

What are you using msconfig to control loading? It would be better for us if we could see all potential items that may load on your PC. Run msconfig and select Normal Startup then reboot. After reboot post a new HJT log and let us know how things are working.

I am using Roadrunner Time Warner Cable. It's fast now but it doesn't last. Later, it gets extremely slow. I was using msconfig to boot into safe mode since I kept getting that blank black screen. Any help about the slow internet connection would be appreciated.

I also have Zonealarm, AntiVir Guard, Spyware Blaster, and Pestpatrol all on my system tray. Would running all those programs be the cause of my slow cable connection?

All programs used to protect you have to impact your connection in some regard. It is a necessary evil to protect you. How much they impact you is a good question. Try a temporary disable or uninstall of them (one at a time) to see if there is any change. I'm not sure how you are defining slow cable and also the fact that it changes over time seems strange.

Also check to see what the impact from C:\Program Files\CleanMyPC Popup Blocker is having on your PC. You could uninstall it and just use a different browser like FireFox which has built in popup blocking.

Earlier I asker about the below setting and do you recognize it? You did not answer:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = proxy1:8080

    This seems suspicious.

No I don't recognize R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = proxy1:8080. Okay I will try uninstalling the programs and try using Firefox instead if IE. What I mean by slow cable connection is that the internet is very slow and sometimes I seem to have no connection at all. Thanks

Fix that Proxy line too with HJT. Then do the below:

Download this trial version of Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
    • The program will have a window come up. One of the buttons on the left is to Update. Click the Update button.and then Start the Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • After it completes the update, click the Scanner button

Now exit Ewido. Now print the below instructions or save them locally because I want you do have no browsers opened and also have no connection to the internet (unplug your cable) while doing the below.

Okay, reboot into safe mode with no network support and follow the steps below. (If you have any problems at all trying to get into safe mode to complete these steps, just run them in normal boot mode and make sure you tell me when you come back.)

Open up Ewido and do the following:

    • Click on Scanner
    • Then click Settings
    • Under What to Scan? Select Scan every file
    • Then click OK
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will start.
    • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files that are infected. Leave the defaults selections (to Remove and backup) and click OK. To save yourself some time, you can select Perform action with all infections and then click OK. With the option to scan every file, a lot of cookies will be removed.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop or anyplace you will be able to find it to upload here.
Now Reboot into normal mode and reconnect to the internet. Now post the Ewido log as an attachment.

I ran the Edwido under safe mode and at the end it asked me if I wanted to remove the whole archive for the ones that they couldn't remove. I didn't know what to do so I just clicked No. Well here is my edwido log. Thanks

There is a good chance all your problems began with:
Cracks and keygens are notorious for spreading malware.

How are things working right now?

Well my internet is fast now. But sometimes it just doesn't work and when I go to the 192.168.1.1 site it comes back on. Is that normal? Anyways I am now pop up free thanks to you. =) By the way how is Firefox better than IE?

  17. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

    What comes back on?
192.168.1.1 is your local network! Isn't it?

Firefox is smaller, faster, had no active x, and less security problems since it is not under attack as much as IE.

  18. jenniboo

    jenniboo Private E-2

Yes it is my network. Sometimes when my internet is down, I just go to 192.168.1.1 site and start clicking and saving port forwarding and upnp forwarding, and then the internet starts working again!

I'm not sure why that is helping but this aspect is not malware related. You may want to consider discussing this in the Networking Forum (maybe someone in the Software Forum would have an idea too but don't double post).

You should be alot more specific about exactly what you click on (figure out which ones are needed) to get it working again.
