Looking to speed up connection via a program if possible...

I live in an area that does not have broadband available and it may never become available unless someone decides to run cable lines 10 miles up into the mountains. I have a dial-up connection and it only connects at a speed of 24K bps as you can see I don't even get 50K bps speeds. I have called both my ISP and local phone company and they have told me there is nothing they can do (ISP) or there is nothing they will do for me (Phone Company) to help me get better speeds. I can tell you that if you thought 56K was slow you need to try my connection... LoL. Doing speed tests I get about 16K bps actual speeds.

My question is there a program that will help me to get a little more speed out this connection? I am unsure of what else to do at this point. I am also a online gamer and these speeds seriously hamper my ability to play some games. If there is anything anyone can suggest I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you Halo for your reply and after reading the links you posted I have already done most of what was suggested. The phone company said that there is nothing they will do to help me because they don't have to guaruntee a connection let alone any kind of speed. I am at my wits end trying to get better speed for my computer, especially since I came from a cable connection in NJ. I know that I am not going to get anywhere near a fraction of that speed, but what I am getting is sad to say the least. I guess I am stuck with what I got then as sad as it is. If only companys would think about the customer more then their pockets!

As jujet84 posted keep on trying.. and use that TcpOtimizer as its proberbly the only thing that will tweak your connection settings and its FREE plus saves you $$$ as you really wont get any increase in speed from any of those "Increase you DUN connection 100 times in speed programs" all they will do is the same as the program above........you are better off trying if your Phone Comp. will let you speak to a engineer rather than a customer service rep. as they may be able to increase the line gain which can help in giving you a little increase in speed...

I personaly have only just gone from DUN ( connected at 49.9kb/s avg DL speed was 4-5kbs ) to ADSL but I spoke very nicely to the CS rep who put me through to engineering who did on a new line tweak the gain for data access rather than voice so it gave me a great DUN connection.

So keep trying and tell the phone rep that you have tried everything... updated drivers etc etc BUT can they help in increasing the line gain?

edit: for typos.. my typing is S........ tonight ;)

I actually had satellite connection a while back and it truely blows for gaming. General surfing & downloading was fantastic, but as far as using it for gaming it wasn't very good at all. :(

Download speeds were like a Ferrari, but uploads were more like a tricycle. I actually had more lag while playing games than I did with dialup.

This is just my experience. Maybe it's gotten alot better now. This was 2 way satellite though. Not the satellite down & 56k up.

I tried talking to the phone company nicely, but they still told me that there is nothing that they will do to help me because it is policy that they can not help with internet matters and if I want speed I have to get DSL even though I don't qualify for it. It was a fight to get them to even let me talk to a foreman. He told me that in order for them to increase the gain they would have to take out the blockers and I would lose voice service. Not sure if that is true or not, but he said that it may not work anyway because I am over 10 miles from the C/O. There is a C/O closer, but it isn't hooked up for DSL at this time. He did tell me that for a price the phone company will run a DSL line to my house and it would be a dedicated line to me. He didn't qoute any prices, but it must be a pretty penny. He also said the reason why I am only getting a 24k bps connection is again because of how far I am from the C/O. I am on the fringe of two seperate C/Os of two towns, but the one is over 10 miles away and the other is only about 2 miles away. If only I can get them to switch me over to the other C/O.

Your ISP says they aren't obligated to provide you with a definate connection?! Man... your ISP sounds like a typical business... imagine that. Seriously though... they sound like real jerks. My first move would be to change ISPs... especially after that comment. That'll teach 'em ;)

It wasn't my ISP that said this... it was the phone company. Sorry for the confusion!

Apart from this ISP, do you have any other internet service provider that you can access?

IF THESE JERKS CAN'T DO ANY GOOD, I RATHER CHANGE THEM.

From what I understand from the phone company is that even if the ISP asks them to help me the phone company will still not do anything. The phone company states as I have already said they are not obligated to make sure that I have a internet connection let alone any kind of speed. They are only obligated to make sure that I can call someone and that I can be called. Even if I was to go with the phone company as my ISP they are still not obligated to make sure I have a connection. My current ISP is Earthlink who I have been with over 3 years now and this is not their fault. This is the fault of Verizon who made this policy about the internet. Even if I was to get a different phone comapny which in NY is possible the phone lines are still owned by Verizon and the new phone company will still have to go through Verizon to give me any help and they will be told the same thing. I have tried the TCPOptimizer and it hasn't helped at all. It is most defintely my distance from the C/O and because I live out in the sticks they usually use drop line to go from the box at the pole to my house which degrades the signal even more. I am just going to have to live with this problem I guess or try and get the phone company to switch my C/O to the closer one.

Yep I'm afraid that your only hope now is that Verizon may change your phone line over to the closer C/O... but I can imagine unless you get a sympathetic ear at Verizon then you are sadly stuck with the naff speed.

As you said your ISP are problerbly just as miffed as you that you cannot get DSL as they would like everyone on it as its more $$ for them and easier system to maintain.

    I wish you luck Donovan.

    Halo,
Thank you for your concern! I have talked to them again, but didn't help. They will not change me over because of Regions and local areas and stuff that I really didn't know what she was talking about. She did however say that DSL is slowely going out to all areas around me and that even though I am over 10 miles from my C/O I may still be eligible for DSL if I am on a slick line. There is still hope, but she doesn't know if I am on said slick or when it is coming to my area. She also said that she is 20 miles from her C/O and DSL and has a Down close to 1.5 Mbs! Not sure if I can trust that because I haven't seen it, but it is still some hope for me to hang on to!

If you have 2 phone lines you should be able to get another 56K Modem and double your speed. This is two separate phone lines (numbers) and two modems.

The technology I am referring to is called "shotgun." It uses two phone lines and two modems to make a single Internet connection. This, in effect, gives you the potential to establish a 112-kilobit-per-second connection to the Internet.

You will need either two modems installed on your computer or one of the specialized, two-in-one shotgun modems. You will also need two phone lines.

Unfortunately, you cannot call two separate Internet providers. Shotgun connections must be made to a single provider, and the provider must support the technology.

Most providers charge a premium for shotgun connections -- often the price of two dial-up accounts.

Keep in mind that the average connect speed of a 56K modem is generally 33K to 44K, so your shotgun connection will average 66K to 88K. This, along with the cost of the equipment, the extra line and the extra fee from your provider, puts you close to the cost of an ISDN connection.

You may want to explore ISDN as a solution to your need for speed. It's a more reliable technology, and two-channel ISDN will get you guaranteed speeds of 128K.

Have a read of this: http://www.56k.com/reports/bonding.shtml

Hi Guys, do you think a v.92/v44 modem would be of any help to this guy? I've been reading up on it, but not really sure if it would help that much over a v90. What do you think?

The modem that I have is a External v.92/v44 modem actually. I had to buy it when I moved up here because my computer only came with a Nic card. I am just going to have to wait till DSL becomes available in my area and if it doesn't will have to live with teh speed I have!

Thanks for all the ideas and help,
    Donovan
