Using Easycleaner, what constitutes a duplicate?

I'm trying out Easycleaner to try and get rid of some duplicate pictures in Picasa and I'm wondering if the "Duplicates Found" by Easycleaner are just that, duplicates. That is, if Easycleaner reports finding, say, two duplicates, that doesn't mean the original .jpg file and one additional does it?

I'm thinking it means that if it found two duplicates and I delete them both, my original will remain intact. Am I correct?

No, I don't think so. I could be wrong. Duplicates mean 2 or more of the same files. i.e. c:\a.jpg & d:\a.jpg are duplicates. If you delete both, they're gone. No originals.

I suggest you don't use that. Heck, I use only the registry cleaner in EC.

Thanks. That's good advice. I think I'll take it.
Funny, though, about language. One would think if EC was searching for duplicates, it would display only extra copies of files, not the originals.

    Thanks again.

EC has no way of knowing which is the original and which is the duplicate. I agree with akhilles' advice, duplicates of some files are necessary for your OS to work. Only an expert should mess with the Duplicates scan.

I also concur. The EasyCleaner HELP file for the Duplicate File app tells you that you must know which files are important (the ones to keep) from any duplicate files. It just finds files with the same name. ie; You have two different applications with a SETUP.EXE file. If you delete (what EC defines as duplicates) the SETUP.EXE files, you will loose both setup files for the two different apps.

This can be a very dangerous tool if you don't know your system extremely well.

Just out of curiousity I have run Duplicate File Finder v1.1.0.3 on my laptop, just now, before I typed this reply.

On my small lot of data, in my laptop, in 42 seconds it found 638 megs of duplicated files (2666).

Most of these are as a result of poor programming, when the program is repeated more than once, in different sub-folders, for the same application.

I've put this project on the back burner lately, but must get back to getting rid of duplicates. Bazza

Thanks for the help w/the latest Microsoft upgrade on the DLL32 bit. It worked great! Now I have another problem, I am with peoplepc.com and I cannot turn off their home page and they have also added Web mail to it which I use OE. By them doing this I am getting duplicate emails which is a pain to say the least, I ask them to correct these problems and did as they suggested for the emails, but it did not help. They did nothing about the home page problem. I joined peoplepc. just for the internet connection not all the other "stuff".
Thanks for any help you can offer, again!

    HI NHMtns

Its always best to start a new topic thread on your issues as many folk who could help may have already posted all their informational help in the original thread as in this one and will not normally return to it, thus overlooked, as in this thread as the topic is Easycleaner.

    Cheers :)
