Basically, at one point I had the cool search amoung other spyware / trojans. I have since cleaned it all completely using Hijack this! and other warez. I only have the very very basic processes running now with no intrusions at all.

But, now I cannot play any media files during a browser session. If I go to a site that has a video file, I see the controls for Windows Media player, but the video window is not there and the control buttons are all grayed out.

I can (if the site allows it) to download, or save target as - and play the video just fine once on my hard disk.

I reset all IE 6 sp2 settings, uninstalled Windows Media Player 10 and reinstalled and associated it with all file types. Deleted internet files/cookies. And ran all MS updates. Same same. I checked my browser settings and I have play sounds / videos in web pages checked. Animations work fine, it is just videos like on espn, or consumption junction or even my local news. I used to get prompted with the "do you want to play video in browser" and I do not anymore, it has the controls display (as previously mentioned) but video does not.

I am at a loss. Any Ideas?

First, I do not recommend fixing things with HJT unless your very familiar with it because not everything is bad. Do you still have the backups from HJT? If so, restore everything and attach the log for me to check.

    • Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT
    • Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file.
    • Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.
    • Run HijackThis and save your log file.
    • Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I am sorry you must of misunderstood me.

What am I saying is that I HAD malware. I am completely clean and I am quite well versed with Hijack this, I knew excatly what I was doing.

In the process - my browser / media player settings got jacked up. I cannot play any video links on the internet in the browser (or have it launch media player externally), but if I save the media file to hard disk (not always an option) I can play it.

The reason I posted the problem here is because it came after I had a browser hijack and malware and cleaned it.

First, since your malware clean I would post this in the Software Forum because this is a IE/MP problem.
