Hi! I am trying to help my dad with his laptop. He has an Acer Aspire 5000 and the audio quit working.
I used teamviewer to access his laptop and he had a Code 10 on the Realtek AC97 Audio. (this device can not start)
After visiting the acer website and downloading the latest driver, the code 10 and yellow exclamation point have disappeared, but there is still no sound.

    Any ideas?

Make sure the sound is not muted. There is also a key combo on laptops, make sure the volume is turned up.
Plug in a headset. Can you get sound through the headset?
