I am new here, so this is my first post. Let me start by saying I'm 62 years old and somewhat "technically challenged". :-o
I have been using Ubuntu for some time now. ( three years ) Recently upgraded to 10.4 and am using an Acer Extensa 4420 laptop. Have had it for about a year.

Everything works fine except my wireless. I cannot get it to function at all. In iconfig it says "no wireless connection". I have all my terminal responses if anyone needs them.

Up to this time I simply haven't bothered with the wireless connection as my wired ethernet connection works fine. However I suddenly had the desire to use my laptop elswhere in the house. Since I am paying dearly for Verizon fios and have a wireless router from them. It would be nice to be able to use it. I originally had Windows on this machine, and it worked fine ( wireless ). I reallize Linux is a whole nuther ballgame. With Ubuntu not even the wireless switch works. I am presuming that I have to install drivers and therein lies my problem.

there appears to be only one driver that I could possibly use. Broadcom STA driver. When I try to activate it it fails and I get a message: Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log
When I attempt to do this, I get a message "permission denied". Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have seen similar threads but am not sure they apply to my particular laptop.

    Thanks!

Thanks for that information. I will study it for awhile, before bungling on ahead. Some of it is confusing to me as I can follow instructions, but when I am expected to know what I am doing. Well that is a whole nuther story!:-D

Ok I read all that and unfortunately most of it is Greek to me. As I said, I am technically challenged.

Perhaps this might tell you something. FYI here is what I got with the iwconfig and lshw commands:

    kenny1948@Kens-Laptop:~$ iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    irda0 no wireless extensions.

    kenny1948@Kens-Laptop:~$ sudo lshw -C network

I did go to the Broadcom site and downloaded the driver they say I needed. Unfortunately it is a tar.gz file, and I have no understanding of how to install it. Yes I can open it, but once I do I don't know what to do with the files therein. The read me really doesen't tell you much.

Maybe I should just forget about using wireless!

No you need to configure your Ubuntu system to use Broadcom drivers! ;)

Have you tried this? I think from 9.04 and up it automagically updated Broadcom for me System> Administration> Additional Drivers

If you connect with the ethernet cable, can you get online?

Here is a how-to that is not as complicated as it seems. :)

I have always had an ethernet connection working. That is not the problem. It is my wireless connection that does not work.

Unfortunately I am not enough of a computer geek, to understand the information provided with the tar.gz file. I do not know what they mean by configuring a "build".

No my Ubuntu drop down does not include anything other than "drivers" and then I am presented with a choice of one which does not work. I added the other one, but cannot activate it. Keep getting an error message "could not install driver" then it tells you to see the log. When I try I get a message "action denied". I have been fumbling with this now for over two months. Have read all the threads, and nothing seems to work.

OK, These are the instructions I followed. The "installation failed" message came after doing just that. I have tried over and over. The same thing keeps happening.

That is why I downloaded the driver from the Broadcom site.

Now just for the heck of it, how do I configure my Ubuntu system to use Broadcom drivers? I'm not stupid, but things have to be explained to me before I understand.

I should have added that the available driver was the Bcm43. The one that failed to install was the sta driver. And every time I do the terminal commands for the kernel I get a message "the latest version is already installed"

    Just Playin MajorGeek

I had the exact same issue on my Gateway laptop, which also has the Broadcom chip. I had to use the Restricted Drivers manger to get the proper firmware. Hook up through your wired connection first.

This is for an older version of Ubuntu, but it is close enough to lead you through the process.

    Have you tried this yet?

    System> Administration> Additional Drivers

What version of Ubuntu is giving you the headaches?

This page may be the solution.
    Code:
    [B]sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

    sudo reboot[/B]

  10. Geekamnot

    Geekamnot Private E-2

OK first, When I go to System>Administration there is no drop down for "Additional Drivers" only one that says "hardware drivers". And that one shows as sat driver. It will not install.

When I use that terminal command this is the result:

    [sudo] password for kenny1948:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
bcmwl-kernel-source is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
    kenny1948@Kens-Laptop:~$

I am using Ubuntu version 10.4 which I recently upgraded to. I had the same problem in Feisty

What it says to do on that page, is exactly what I have been trying to do!

  11. Geekamnot

    Geekamnot Private E-2

OK let me try an make myself clear on this.

I have looked at all the suggestions, and suggested links.

First I have no "restricted drivers" or "additional drivers" in my dropdown menu under system/administration. Please see screenshot-0

Secondly I have tried and tried to install the sta driver. But when I hit "activate" I get a message that it failed, "see log". Please see screenshot-2
When I try to view the log in terminal, I get the message "access denied".

When I have used the terminal command "sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source" I get a readout saying:

    kenny1948@Kens-Laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
    [sudo] password for kenny1948:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
bcmwl-kernel-source is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
    kenny1948@Kens-Laptop:~$

So I think I have explained myself fairly well. If you have any other suggestions on how to accomplish this. I would be very appreciative.

I have exhausted all possible fixes so far!

I know that there is an answer out there somewhere.rolleyes

    The explaination was PERFECT!

If you have 10.04 we can use synaptic. I would remove all the references to Broadcom, do the install icon a the top (this will remove all of them) and then add per the steps below. Hang in there you are close, and that 4312 card is a bugger per Google.

Ubuntu Forum Post on the log error you posted.

    Thanks,
I just saw this reply. For some reason I did not get an e'mail notification. I have had other issues going on the few days, the election and a dying dog.
She had to be put to sleep yesterday. Sorry, but I'm not really up to tinkering with this right now, but I will study what you have posted and Thanks!

    geekamnot, the use of

I thought 10.04 removed the need to "blacklist" opensource broadcom drivers.

This Ubuntu Forum Thread says I am wrong.[/URL]

[QUOTE]If lsmod shows module bcm43xx and other conflicts installed you will
need to blacklist them, since you are going to be using B43.
You may have to remove the following depending on what lsmod
    shows:

    [CODE]modprobe -r b44
    modprobe -r ndiswrapper
You can use sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and add the necessary modules to blacklist.

Once this is all straightened up..........
    I'd reboot or try:

    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
    [/QUOTE]

I have to be very honest here. I simply do not understand any of this.

There are a lot of terminal commands shown, but I really don't know what they are for.

By the way I am using the 64bit version of 10.4 which is weird because what I had installed was the 32 bit version of feisty, which I was told I could use on this machine. Then when I updated, I guess it installed the other version.

Perhaps I should just do an entire new install from disk? Or is the 36 vs 64 bit stuff my problem. ( I honestly do not understand the difference or why I was told I could run the 32 bit version on a 64 bit processor )

I don't mean to drive everyone nuts, but I simply do not know all that much about computers.

Just a note: Did you install the firmware, not drivers, for this card?

    http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#Ubuntu.2BAC8-Debian

BoredOutOfMyMind also posted a link in Post#5 that explains how to install the firmware if there is no internet connection.

    Good Luck.

I would recommend starting over with 32 bit, as you are not far enough to make that big of a difference. Somethings will not work on 64 bit and that will frustrate you more.

Plenty of geeks with plenty of patience for you!

    :-D

Well, I decided to start from scratch. Since the update was recent, I didn't have a lot that needed backing up. I decided to download the CD and do a reinstall. This time I decided to go a step further. I downloaded 10.10 32 bit. It installed flawlessly!
Then within seconds I noticed my wireless switch light up. With that I checked my wifi. It detected the network. I simply had to get my WEP encryption, and I was up and running!

Now I don't have to be plugged into my bedroom wall!

Thanks everyone for all your help.

I would never have thought about doing this by myself.

    Thanks again!:wave

Just one recommendation. I would try to increase your wireless security to at least WPA with a AES encryption key if your hardware supports it. WEP is just too weak and easily hacked.

Once again you have left me clueless. :confused I had a heck of a time getting Verizon to explain that the encryption key was written right on my router. Getting anything out of them is like getting blood out of a stone. They are totally windows centric! The minute they hear you use Linux they want to hang up on you. They simply tell you to use Windows and install THEIR software.

The security protocol and encryption key is in your router and has nothing to do with linux. You would have to change the wireless settings for your adapter in Ubuntu but that is not difficult. I am not sure if the linux drivers for your Broadcom chip will work for WPA though. You can go to the manufacturers site of your router and get the manual to see how to set up wireless security. I take it you are using a Verizon router. Also, make sure you are not using the default password for your router. I take it you are using a Verizon router. Maybe somebody here with more linux experience or with a Verizon account can help.

You can access the router by a browser by typing http://192.168.1.1 as shown on this page. If that is not your router, click next, then click on the left side links for more choices with pictures.
