I have a Compaq HP Presario V6000 with Vista Home Basic. Everything seems to be working fine, except Windows Media Player. When I try to access WMP, I get a message saying "Windows Media Player has stopped working." It continues to search for a fix for the problem, but unsuccessfully. I cannot figure out how to uninstall this program, nor can I install one on top of it to try and fix the problem. What do you suggest (besides just using a different program)?

what does it say when you try to reinstall WMP?

When I tried to reinstall, it said that I had a newer version already on my computer and I could not get the older version that was offered (I can't find my version or a newer one on microsoft.com). I have WMP 11 point something for Vista.

I tried it and it still says I have a newer version (11.0.6000...) vs. its 11.0.5746... or something. So it didn't work. What next?

Search your computer for any trace of WMP... and delete it. Then try to re-install when your sure that every file, folder and program associated with WMP has been removed.

I looked through the FAQ. I couldnt find any place that it said anything about my problem. If you direct me to the exact spot it addresses my problem that would be fantastic.

My apologies...or rather, Microsoft's apologies, as their "Uninstall" link for V11 was more a "rollback" link, which being Vista isn't an option for you.

So, a few questions as I need more info. Was the machine bought with Vista pre-installed, or have you upgraded from XP?

Also do you have Nero 7.5 premium installed (or related version) and/or Nero Showroom? Compatibility issues between these and WMP11 for Vista have been detected. In uninstalling Nero the WMP has functioning without problem.

The machine came with Vista already installed.
I do not have anything Nero related on my laptop that I know of.

same this happened to me and I found this solution somewhere (can't remember who gets the credit) and it worked like a charm:

on the command line type the following one at a time:

    regsvr32 wmp.dll
    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll

hope it works for you like it did for me.

This is a frustrating situation that many are experiencing with WMP11 and Vista. It seems the only guaranteed solution is a reinstall.

Do any of our MVPs here have some alternative suggestions before going to reinstall?

Im curious, has WMP been tried in a different user account?

I assume you meant to go to cmd from Run and type these in pressing enter between each. If that's right, when I tried it I got the same exact error message for each one. They included a few numbers and letters. All in all, it did nothing for me.
I've gotten it to start coming up when I click on it, instead of just giving me an error message saying "Windows Media Player has stopped working." But, it freezes once opened. I think windows updated itself and that's why it started coming up, but like I said, still not workable.
I don't see a way to sign in as a guest or onto another account unless I have to create one ahead of time or something. So I don't know if that would help or not.
Reinstalling is still not an option unless you know of a way to do it on Vista that I haven't already tried.
    What else??

Out of curiosity, have you installed any 3rd party media player programs?

To satisfy a post that Adrynalyne posted, try:

    1. Click Start and click Control Panel.
    2. Click User Accounts and Family Safety.
    3. Under User Accounts, click Add or remove user accounts.
    4. Click Create a new account.
    5. Type in the account name. Select the account type: Standard or Administrator.
    6. Click Create Account.
    7. Select the account you just created. Click Create a password.
    8. Type in a password for the user account and an option password hint.
    9. Click Create password.
Then try logging into this other account, and see if the results are the same.

Also, a program called Satellite TV To PC can cause WMP to stop working in Vista.

Also, any codecs for vista install lately?

I was going to install a Vista Codec package from this site, and it said it had to uninstall DivX or something, so it did, and then it said it could not download and it quit on me. So I don't know what caused all of that, but it didn't help the problem.

    Hi

Can you download and install this codec for Vista http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5326

How are you opening WMP for this error to occur, does it happen when you open WMP on its own or only when you double click a media file to open WMP, or both?

What file types are you trying to open? ( eg. mp3 )

Run WMP and get the error you get, then goto Event Viewer which is located in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > View Event Logs > then once open click Windows Logs > Application and see if an Error event is listed for WMP around the time of the crash, then copy the text into your next post, it may highlight the faulting module.
