Could someone be kind enough to explain just how 1080p works or more precisely, does having a 1080pHD monitor require special connectors?

    Hi

1080p simply is the resolution, which is 1080 pixels vertically, and 1920 pixels across. The "p" stands for "progressive scan", different from "interlaced". The difference between those two is that a progressive scan paints the monitor top to bottom, while interlaced paints every other line, and then goes back and paints the ones in between. Interlaced video is the old technology, progressive scan is the newer.

1080p cables are commonly HDMI (high definition media interface) or DVI (digital video interface), which is essentially the same cable, just different connectors (you can get HDMI-DVI and DVI-HDMI adapters for the cable ends, if necessary). They also have mini-HDMI connectors now, which are smaller.

I hope this answers your question.

HDMI cables carry audio as well. All you need is a HDMI or DVI port on your laptop/desktop and the respective cable. Monitors usually come with a DVI cable when purchasing a 1080p monitor.
