I was trying to remove the Avira popup; however, when I try to access gpedit.msc, secpol.msc or use Local Security Settings I get an error message-

MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in management might not have been installed correctly.

    Are you running Windows 2000??

OK; The 'Disable the splash screen worked. I remembered that I did this a while back; howevere and update to Avira totally removed/overwrote the "/nosplash" switch.

    Thanx

The splash screen is different from the screen mentioned by the OP. The splash screen is the Avira logo that comes up for 5 seconds when you boot to the Windows desktop; the screen the OP wants to disable is the "buy the pro version now" nag screen that pops up whenever Avira does its daily update. I use Avira and had no problems killing the nag by using the 3rd set of instructions posted above by LauraR (I'm running XP Pro).

One thing everyone should know... On the new version of Avira, they have change the location on your hard drive it installs to. it is now "C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop"

They changed the folder "AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic" to "AntiVir Desktop" as the default install location. I don't know if they did this trying to fool people into 'keeping' the pop-up screen when it updates.

On another note.... I recently installed the newest release of Avira's AntiVir (from this link) on my home PC (about 3-4 weeks ago) and I have absolutely no recollection of making the above edits to stop the nag screen (I've done it in the past w/o issues), but I have not seen any nags since I installed it. Perhaps Avira finally removed it from their top-notch free AV app!

No luck. I updated and got the same popups as before.

I get them still. Just smaller. (Plus two false positives since the upgrade :( I never used to get false positives)

:-o I just went and checked my policy settings rolleyes I guess I did make the changes and just have no memory of doing it. This is a direct result of having "too much fun" in my early 20s following the Grateful Dead around; my memory is like swiss cheese :innocent

    LOL

How did you do it? I tried to go in the folder and there are no longer 'Security' settings with Avira 9.

If you are asking how to disable the popup, it is exactly like you quoted in your first post, it's just that the path has changed.

    C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe
    has changed to:
    C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avnotify.exe

*the reason you may not have a 'securities' setting is that simple file sharing is turned on*

Yep...I had gone into the new folder...no security tab. How do you check if the file sharing is turned on?

No luck. as per my initial post. The Avira popup is still there. I have tried all the choices and cannot access gpedit... (Even in Safe mode)

Again...what operating system are you using??

The only reason for you to access gpedit.msc is if you are on Windows 2000.

    Hi...

Ignore my last post. What I would suggest you do is start a new post with a title referring to the problem you are having accessing gpedit.msc

You might get someone that will have a suggestion on how to repair the snap-in.

You may also want to do a search on microsoft.com and see if you can come up with a fix. After you repair it, hopefully, that will also solve your avira popup.
