Quick, how easy is it to...

replace a ballast in a fluorescent light? My Mom in law needs one doing today, and I'm gonna give it a shot.

Any basic instructions?

Good link Star. The two key points: Take the old ballast with you to get the new one, as there are different types, and make SURE the power is off before disconnecting anything. They're normally connected with wire nuts, which you can re-use for the new ballast. If yours does not use wire nuts, pick some up while at the hardware store. They're cheap, easy to use, and make good safe connections.

 

Also...

A ballast can/will sometimes hold a charge even after you've turned the breaker off!! So just be extra super very careful when you stick the screwdriver in there and don't cross it with anything, if so, you will get one hell of a big/bright flash that looks like someone just ignited the worlds largest piece of litmus paper about one inch from your eyeballs, and it is literally bright enough to blow you off the ladder!!

Don't mean to scare you, but just telling you to be careful with the srcewdriver while you're in there!!!
