    Can anyone offer any advice for a Philips 40x Cd-rom which is showing "F:\ not accessible" & "device not ready" within a Windows 98 o/s.

    I have checked the jumpers (set to slave accordingly), tried all sorts of settings within bios.

    Device manager/Nero detect the drive fine and report no problems.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards

    Does it recognize any disks at all, or is it one particular disc

    Have you tried using a cd lens cleaner

    have you recently installed/uninstalled any burning apps

    * It doesn't recognize any disks at all
    * Cd cleaner - I need to purchase one, but I don't think that is the problem - windows explorer shows the same message whether disk inserted or not
    * No recent un/installed apps

    ditch it, it's dead, you'll need a new one, my old Philips drive crapped out on me exactly the same way.

    One last thing I would try before ditching the drive is seeing if you can boot off of a CD, like your Windows 98 CD.

    If you can, the drive may not be bad.

    Thanks for your input. The CD Rom is in someone else's Pc so I will feed on the advice.
