Windows 7 (64 bit Dell Studio Laptop). Came home Tuesday and noticed McAfee Security Window showing that something had been blocked. Thought "whew." Upon closer inspection, turned out to be My Security Shield. I tried to get rid of it by cancelling and it finally went away...I thought. Later, Googled something and it took me to someplace like Gala or something. Wierd! Later on began looking for some files that I needed for work but the folders were empty...nothing there. Heart-attack! Hoping that I had copied them to a home networked XP machine, I decided to look in the folders on the Laptop from the XP machine. Lo and behold, they were there! Downloaded Hijack This and saw a bunch of stuff that didn't look right but I don't know enough about it to do anything for sure.

Read the Read Me and did as much of the Vista Cleaning procedures as possible (logs attached).

    Sure hope someone can help!

Hi there and welcome. I am currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions in the next post I make to you.

Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    • It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    • Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    • Click the Make Writeable? button. (if you only see a Make Read-Only selection, it is already writeable so skip this button).
    • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
    • Paste the following code under the [IMG] area. Do not include the word Code.

    Code:
    :Files
    C:\ProgramData\796b2e
    C:\Windows\TEMP\ib6824.tmp
    C:\Windows\TEMP\ib6825.tmp
    C:\Windows\TEMP\ib6826.tmp
    C:\Windows\TEMP\ib6856.tmp
    C:\Windows\TEMP\ib6A1B.tmp
    C:\Users\Brian\Local Settings\TEMP\6557.tmp
    C:\Users\Brian\Local Settings\TEMP\BF0A.tmp
    C:\Users\Brian\Local Settings\TEMP\Low
    C:\Users\Brian\Local Settings\TEMP\si593.tmp

    :reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "My Security Shield"=-

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large [IMG] button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

How are things running for you now? :)

Thanks for helping me get through this. I really appreciate that there are good people out there still riding the white horses!

I'm afraid the HostExperts program didn't work. A box showed up that said...
    Error: Cannot create file C:|Windows\System32\Drivers\ETC\hosts

I went ahead with the rest of your instructions for OTM and MGTools but I think the bad guy(s) is still there. While MGTools was running HiJack This, the following popped up:

"For some reason, your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HiJack This may not be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:
    Notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press enter. Find the line HiJack This reports and delete them. Save the file as 'host.' (with quotes) and reboot.

For Vista: simply exit Hijack This, Right click on the HJT icon, choose 'Run as Administrator.'

This may be too much or unnecessary info, but while working with MGTools, the Folders Documents and Settings, Recyle Bin, System Recovery, System Volume Info and MSOCache all have little 'locks' on the icons.

Thanks again for your help. I look forward to your next response!

Then reset the host file yourself:

How do I reset the hosts file back to the default?

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Tell me how things are running now.

Well, I finally figured out how to come up with a new host file. After doing that, I re-did your last set of instructions. So, I hope things are better now. I haven't used the computer much after rebooting and replying here. How do things look to you?

    Thanks again for your help!

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

    What's inside of this folder?

    • C:\ProgramData\MSRPRMTZXS

    Delete this folder:
    • C:\ProgramData\ParetoLogic

Your logs look clean to me, so tell me, how are things running now?

Thought we had it there for a while.....
Everything seemed back to normal until I googled something. The next thing I saw was some GALA page. That 's not what is supposed to happen!

    Ran CCleaner.

Inside * C:\ProgramData\*MSRPRMTZXS* is MSWEERGS.cfg Not a clue what that is!!!!!!

    Deleted C:\ProgramData\ParetoLogic

Thanks for being patient with me and mine!

C:\ProgramData\MSRPRMTZXS <--- delete the whole folder then.

Now I realise that you are running 64 bit windows, but let's run this tool which will still run on your system, just in a reduced functionality mode.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

C:\ProgramData\MSRPRMTZXS has been deleted (had to run as administrator to do it.

Question - when I'm on MajorGeeeks, sometimes certain words are underlined and if the mouse hovers over them, a floating window pops up --of course they aren't there now--sometimes they advertise bing....is this supposed to be?

Attached is the log you requested.

    Thank you!

They are advertising boxes that will appear as your mouse moves over various keywords on the webpages you are viewing. These are quite normal on many sites ( even Major Geeks main site ) as it is a source of revenue to keep the sites running.

Okay well TDSSKiller did not find anything, so let me ask you, what issues are you currently having? When you make a search using google is everything normal again? If not let me know what exactly is happening.

Seems that I'm in a bit of a conundrum. When Googling in Internet Explorer 8, in the little bar at the bottom of the window, left, I see waiting...www.findgala.com... then it times out. As in "diagnose connection problems. FireFox is fine. So, something is definitely up with IE!

Now this is a major scary moment. I have Finale Software documents in three folders on this laptop. When I open one of these folders, it reports/looks like it is completely empty. Matter of fact, all three doc folders appear empty. However, using my home network, when I open up one of these same folders from a different computer, the files are there. In all three folders. Somethings hiding them.

Fortunately I have them backed up but this is really wierd. I appreciate your ideas and directions!

    Try this:

    Does this make any difference?

I assumed 'hardware' to mean the router (D-Link DIR-628). Reset to Default factory settings. I'm afraid nothing has changed.

findgala.com takes over the google search in IE 8 and the folders still appear empty on Windows 7 (64) but files are present when viewed from the XP computer.

Open a notepad (go to Start > Run and type in Notepad and click OK).
Copy/paste the following text inside the code box into a new notepad document.

    Code:
    @ECHO OFF
    regedit /e look1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes"
    regedit /e look2.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes"
    Type look*.txt >log.txt
    start log.txt
    del look1.txt look2.txt
    del %0
    • Go to the File menu at the top of the Notepad and select Save as.
    • Select save in: desktop
    • Fill in File name: look.bat
    • Save as type: All file types (*.*)
    • Click save
    • Close the Notepad.
    • Locate look.bat on the desktop.
    • Right-click to run it as administrator.
    • A notepad opens, copy and paste the content (log.txt) to your reply.

    Hey,

Between you and I, I think I'm finally good. Spent some quality time with my computer this weekend. Concerning the browser hijacker, with in IE 8, I was able to change the findgala.com searcher by completely deleting Google as a possiblity. Once that was accomplished, I added back Google as a default search possibility and made it my number one choice!

As it turns out, the files that were being hidden on the laptop yet visible from other networked machines, have in fact been restored. I think that something with the network and user permissions got screwed up. I've played around with folders and have gotten everything working the way it is supposed to!

Now that I am whole again, allow me to say that I take comfort in knowing that there are people out there who are willing to give of their time and expertise in helping us keep our tools in tip top shape. Thanks for what you do.

Until the next time you're needed......

Then if all is well you can follow final steps. :) (Let a week go by to be sure first)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
