Question Help! Titanic game crashes on Windows XP Home

Hi,

I have posted this problem on a couple of other tech help boards, but nobody can seem to help me.

While browsing gamespot.com's forum, I came across a post that said some people had figured out how to run "Titanic: Adventure Out of Time" on Windows XP (they did not say how, however) so I thought I would install my game on my pc. I had played it several times on my Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me. Since I can barely get my Windows Me to start anymore, I thought it would be cool to play it on my Windows XP.

I installed the game on my Windows XP Home after installing a program that allows Windows Xp to run older games because my computer could not read the disc. I installed the standard version of the game, not the Direct X version.

It is running, but my game crashes in the middle of the conversation with Smethels the cabin steward at the beginning of the game.
I have changed the sound option to 16 and the conversation goes a little further, but I can't get past the conversation. I have also changed the compatibility mode to Windows 98/Me and both options below it ticked.

The Tour runs fine.

Any ideas what is causing the crashing and how would I fix it?

If you need more info, please ask. Thank you for your help.

P.S. I downloaded and installed the Aida32 program, but I am unsure how to use it.

Here is the printout for my DirectX Diagnosis: Some of it may be too much info, but the gist of it should help.

It seems none of our experts here know the answer to my problem. I guess a solution has not been found by anyone yet.

It was worth a try. Thanks for listening anyhow.

Although I don't have this installed now I did before and was able to play it fine.

If you have it installed, uninstall it and remove all traces of it from your pc including run a registry cleaner and make sure the file is deleted from your program files.

If I recall correctly what I had to do was insert the disc then close out the screen that comes up when it auto runs. Browse the disc by going to start > run and find the exe installer on the disc, right click and choose properties. Now choose to install it in compatibility mode. I think I used Win98 as that is the OS I had before. Now double click the installer to install the game. I don't recall if I had to also select run in compatability mode after it was installed but I most likely did just to cover the bases.:D

I was able to play the game to completion on my XP machine. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your response, AbbySue.

I will try what you suggest when I reinstall the game and let you know here how it goes.

Everyone else has told me to change the compatibility mode AFTER the game has been installed; which is what I did. Perhaps that is why my game is crashing in the middle of the dialogue.

Thank you.

Question Re: Help! Titanic game crashes on Windows XP Home

Okay, I have installed the game as you suggested.

Now I am having a problem running the game. I get a "not enough memory" warning - which is strange because I'm not running anything in the background as I have everything turned off.

What can I do??

That's all it says is not enough memory?: Video? RAM?

Have you checked event viewer (start > settings > control panel > administrative tools > event viewer) under system & application for more detailed information about the error?

@ nktinnj..I see on the web site they say it is compatible with XP if run in classic mode. Is that how you are trying to run it and do you have active desktop turned off?

What do you mean by "classic mode"? What website are you talking about?? The official one is no longer in existance.
I'm not sure what you mean by "active desktop".

I'll attach the event viewer results tomorrow. I have to get to sleep now.

Is there more than one Titanic game?: If there is, my apologies as I thought the ONLY one was the one I linked to in post #9 which is where I purchased my copy when it came out long before WinXP was released. Cyberflix, as I recall changed to or were bought out by barracuda before I bought my copy so to me, they were always the official site.

Here is a scaled down scan of what I have..is this the same Titanic game you have?

Yes, that's the Titanic Adventure Out of Time game I have.

I didn't know Cyberflix was bought out by barracuda or maybe I heard long ago and just forgot.

What do you mean by "classic mode"?

Question Re: Help! Titanic game crashes on Windows XP Home - Update

An update: The game ran fine up to the Smethells conversation again without the memory warning. (The memory warning seems to come and go depending on what I do before playing Titanic on my XP. I'm not sure why.)

The game is crashing as the Smethells conversation starts like it has been doing.

I looked up the "classic mode" thing the barracuda website was talking about that you mentioned, AbbySue. I know how to activate the classic desktop mode on Windows Me (I just did it on my Windows Me where I am playing Titanic (while we try to figure out how to play it on XP) (because I got a black screen while saving),but how do I do it on Windows XP? I looked up classic desktop mode on Windows XP Help and it is not there.

To run XP in Classic Style, right-click empty part of your desktop, then Properties, then Appearance tab, then it's in the Windows and Buttons drop-down box.

If not, try playing around with the settings in Compatibility Mode.

Sometimes Windows 95 or 2000 work when 98 doesn't etc.

And don't have any ScreenSavers set or AntiVirus active.

(The DirectX version is more suitable for your system)
