herd drive size shows up wrong

I have an old compaq PC here that my son gave me. It runs win ME, amd athlon, and has a 40gb hard drive, it says it on the case and I even took it out to check it and it's 40gb, but it's only showing up in "my computer" as 1.99gb total size. How do I get the entire 40gb hard drive back?

Is the drive partitioned? Try going to Start, My Computer, and see if there is more than one hard drive listed.

No, it's not partitioned. It lists only drive C. D is the cd drive.
obtw, I meant to say HARD drive in the title

 

I went into the setup utility, and it is listed there as a 40 gb as well. I ran check disk and even disk defrag and they ran fine and found no problem, but "my computer" still lists it as only 1.99 gb. I would think there'd be some utility I could run that would discover it's true size.

 

Use CCleaner to delete all unused and temporary files.
Some space of your hd could become unallocated. To find this space you can use 3rd party software like Disk Director or another disk management utility.

 

Sounds like a BIOS that doesn't allow a larger hard drive. Check the screen when it starts to boot and see if you can find out what type and version of the bios is running on the machine. Then you need to see if you can find an upgrade. Try the BIOs Manufacturer if that doesn't work, contact Hewlett Packard Customer support, they bought out Compaq, maybe they can help.
