Recently i have been experiencing a real slow down in the speed of my computer, when i opened task manager to check processes i saw that explorer was taking up 99% of my CPU which i know isnt right (as you can tell i am NOT a computer expert lol) i was wondering if anyone could perhaps help me solve this problem?

    thank you in advance. =)

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
      • Bitdefender
      • Panda Scan
      • HijackThis
    .

i cant complete step 1 or 2 of the thread. Whenever i go to add or remove programs it takes forever the populate the list of programmes and then ends up not responding, the same thing also happened when i clicked on disable system restore, i clicked yes to the warning, then it carried on doing something (cursor changed to a sandclock) then it ended up not responding.

Step 2 has nothing to do with Add/Remove programs or system restore. Why can't you do step 2? Perhaps you did not mean step 2. You probably meant to say step 0 and step 1????

You are not supposed to be disabling system restore anyway. That step is a notice/warning so you will know that after cleaning all malware you are supposed to toggle system restore off then on.

If you cannot open Add/Remove programs in Normal Boot mode, have you tried using Safe Mode. If that does not help, just skip that step for now.

It could take more time that that. Dependends on whether you did all the other steps before it properly first (like emptying quarantine folders, etc) also do not change the default reporting options in the scan otherwise it will take even longer because it will report all files scanned, even clean ones.
