no default gateway found and cannot renew ip

hi

my comp running xp sp2 cannot connect to the internet anymore. I helped retrieve someones files from their hd which was messed up by making it a slave. when i took it out, my comp booted up fine but i got the limited or no connectivity error. I tried everything possible in every forum like the sp2 patch, the winsock fix, manually releasing and renewing my ip, reinstalling the NIC driver, but my comp wouldn't get an ip.
Finally I did a repair install. this got rid of the limited or no connectivity problem and now the comp gets an ip from the network when i bootup but there is no default gateway or any other info except for an ip address, and i cannot renew the ip so i still do not have access to the internet.

any ideas???

you need to find out what your router/modem IP address is, that will be your default gateway. From the web interface for the device you can find out the DNS server and such and just manually configure your IP address.

 

first, the comp is on a network that assigns new ips every couple days. i dontknow if that will affect it, but i found out the default gateway, dhcp, dns, and wins and put them all in manually but i still cannot gain connection. is there anything else i should try before formatting the hd?
