    Hi,
I want to set up a situation from my home pc to 6 friends around Europe, where I can live-stream a webcam+audio feed with a real-time chat to comment on the vid streams. The access must be passworded. I also need to transfer large files between these linked computers. These all need to be secure, encrypted data transfers.

I have read about VPNs, Hamachi, Privoxy. Always the focus is web browsing or basic file sharing. Nothing addressing my specific application.

Please suggest a solution, with software and hardware recommendations. Will a WinXP(home, not Pro)tower with 2.4Ghz/2Gb RAM be powerful enough to host this small network? If no, what do I need to run SMOOTHLY. I have a 10Mb/1Mb ADSL IP connection, TCP/Iv4 set to auto connect. Do I need a static address to make this happen? Should I upgrade my upload speed? To how much? What minimum specs will the other pcs on this network need to receive a smooth stream and quickly post chat comments?

Is video conferencing better formy purposes?

    Thanks very much
    Bones:confused

I shouldn't have to go into to depth with this question...
Using some basic maths streaming video to just one induvidual would get them about 23 Frames Per Second
If you was to stream it to 6 people they would each get about 3-4 FPS
Based apon a 1440x900 screen shot at 240KB

If your aim is to be the host you would require an application that would stream it which I recommend VLC Player because it has the capability of streaming and receiving video.
Using Remote desktop clients like TightVNC are not fast enough and the majority of them dont support sound streaming, and you get about 3FPS with TightVNC and other VNC clients so you would require allot of tweaking and modification.

In other words you would require better Bandwidth...

Encryption is not necessary and if you wish to send large amounts of data between two computers may I suggest a P2P program like uTorrent.

Wrong, a video stream doesn't equal a screenshot that you saved off a desktop. Video is a different beast by far.

FYI: I want to stream a live audio/video feed from my studio to 6 other engineers. I want them to comment in real time. If porn webcam sites can do this with hundreds of clients, it must be possible for me to do half a dozen. As for encryption, I can't risk leaking pre-release material I only have permission to share with my staff.

Excuse me Dead Arcticrolleyes, your answer really ignores my question, what does a screenshot got to do with it? Maybe you should leave the advice to MG staff.

I would like to say that I was very tired whiles I wrote that.
Now I wasn't thinking clear and I was thinking of live video streaming.
Now with VLC Player you would be streaming Data, not live footage, but there would still be allot of buffering involved.
Now it is possible to get the chat working with live data, one of the most popular YouTube's has a live feed when ever he recored his videos but it is usually on a live feed but also records them.

Now I have re-read what you posted all of the above is irrelevant
But any way I didn't read your question correctly so you want live webcam footage, don't forget that theres all ways Skype which is pretty cheap.

And yes those Webcam porns sites... yes we all know them but any way they have an amazing bandwidth so thats how they do it, But then again they could not be streaming it directly from the site but it acts as a tracker for those who sign up and the Live video stream gets streamed directly from the Web-cammer.

    And with your comment:
    What was you implying?

    Off Topic
Thank you for reminding me that who I really am (nobody).
Just keep in mind that the MG staff can't assist every body and forums are more of a community than just getting replies from staff members only, it's about each and every person on the forum contributing to others.
That's all, I understand you criteria.
I strictly remember the Guide Lines but on your behalf I will read them again.
