My main pc has just become infected with this nasty virus, and i cant seem to remove it. However its basically gone beyond me looking for a quick fix solution, i know im gonna have to reformat the drive just to be safe. What i want to know is how to get my files off the pc. I cant find them anywhere, basically the virus removed all my programs from the start menu then after that it removed all my files and folder structure from view.. im pretty certain those files are still on the drive because of the GB space left..

The pc is running XP pro... i cant access safemode, the machine just goes to blue screen.. really at a dead end with this

any help is greatly appreciated! thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Yes that is the proper fix if you really have Ramnit. But note that you must have more than a Ramnit infection since it does not hide your files and folders. It just infects almost all executables which includes HTML files.

What files in particular? You MUST NOT backup anything that is an excutable ( nothing you downloaded to install any programs, no exe, dll, com, html, pdf, ... etc files).

This is not from Ramnit. If these are still missing then please download and save the below tool from Grinler @ bleepingcomputer to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it. Now see if you can find your Programs?

Thank you for your reply. My files were hidden, i managed to find an app similar to the one you posted above that allowed me to see them again! I did have Ramnit, i expect something else too like you said.. i just went ahead and formatted the drive and did a fresh install of XP, was a good opportunity to upgrade to SP3.. also i managed to get my files off the drive, did a full scan with kaspersky and none of them were infected, i deleted all my .exe and .html files

    thanks for your help :)
