    First and foremost, thanks in advanced for any assistance provided.

    Original Symptoms:
    Starting Friday - April 30th, 2010

    Browser would redirect search results. Searches for AVG, Norton, or any well known anti-virus program would close my FireFox browser.

    STEPS TAKEN:
    I immediately went to BitDefender for an online scan. BitDefender was able to locate this infection.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ecbebcbcfabbdce.dll --> Trojan.Generic.2955310
    --> Process winlogon.exe (660)

    Confirmed that the file was in fact on my computer in the specified location. Noticed that it was linked to my winlogon.exe process as documented in the scan results.

    Launched 'regedit' searched my registry for entries containing ecbebcbcfabbdce.dll and was able to locate a set of registry keys embedded in my winlogon tree. Exported the tree to document find. Delete the ecbebcdcfabbdce tree. Reboot. Upon reboot I opened the registry again to confirm deletion. No change. Entry was back again.

    Decided to attempt to download AVG to assist removing the infection. Attempted access the website. Browser closed. Attempted to search for it. Browser closed. Downloaded the AVG setup file to a networked computer. Moved the file to a shared drive. Copied the setup file from drive and placed on desktop. Upon attempting to run the setup file the application would close immediately. Renamed the setup file. No change still closed.

    Since the infection was blocking my ability to install 'certain' programs. I decided to go a bit further.

    Downloaded PsTools (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896649.aspx) on a networked computer. Extracted content of PsTools to an networked drive. Placed a copy of the PsTools folder on my C:\

    Ran the following command lines with the already registry open

    CD C:\PsTools
    pssuspend winlogon.exe (suspend winlogon process)
    pssuspend explorer.exe (suspend explorer process)

    Attempted to suspend rundll.dll but was unable to.

    Deleted the registry tree again. Preformed a hard reboot.

    Confirmed registry tree was in fact gone. Was able to install AVG. AVG was able to detect the ecbebcbcfabbdce.dll file and remove as well as an additional trojan.

    I was still getting an occasional browser redirect when search via google.com

    Followed your READ ME/RUN ME guide and will include the logs.

    I will also include logs I've gathered

    I've also include a text copy of the registry tree I removed.

    Your logs are clean. What issues are you still having?

    Does it happen in all browsers? Have you cleaned out your temp internet files?

    The issue is also present when using IE.

    I've cleared TEMP files using Internet Options via Control Panel.

    When it redirects once, I close the page and click on the search result again and it loads the correct site.

    Are you saying it happens in IE as well as in Firefox? If that is the case, I would suggest you uninstall both IE and Firefox, run CCLeaner as well as ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Then re-install and see if you have the same problems.

    What ever is causing this is not showing up in your logs. Please run SAS and MBAM on each of the other two user account. And also open a command prompt and flush your dns :

    C:\>ipconfig /flushdns

    Did you uninstall both browsers completely?

    I removed both Internet Explorer and Firefox and ran both CCleaner and ATF.

    Reinstalled IE first and then reinstalled Firefox.

    Ran SAS and MalB no threats detected.

    Flushed DNS via command prompt. No change still getting redirect in IE and Firefox and the redirects are also occurring within ALL user accounts.

    As I type this I realize I also have Safari. I will uninstall ALL browsers again and attempt to run CCleaner and ATF.

    Are there certain registry keys I should be looking for that could cause this issue?

    Hey Tim, if there is anything I can provide you with, no matter how technical it may be, please let me know.

    I've been searching my registry slowly for any abnormalities that would stick out to me and I've yet to find anything.

    Hey Tim,

    I found the following registry entry. Let me know what you think. I have not removed it.

    The registry entry was from the following location

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\eacd

    It references a file called eacd.sys

    Then lets remove it and see what happens.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::
    Driver::
    eacd
    File::
    c:\windows\system32\eacd.sys
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\eacd]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Followed the instructions.

    Looks like the script you provided may have resolved the issue. As of right now I have not seen anymore browser redirects.

    I've included the logs for your review and I will continue to monitor my computer.

    Good to know!! Let me know if you have any other issues.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
