USB ports stop functioning.

The problem is is that after I've been online for a while, downloading a big file, or especially if I've been playing something like CoD2 for longer than 30 minutes, my USB ports just stop working. This is really annoying seeing as how my DSL connection relies on a PC Port that connects via USB. Everything's fine after I've restarted, but I really don't want to go through that hassle over and over.

    My specs are.

    ASUS P5LD2-Deluxe
    Pentium 4 530J Prescott CPU
1 gig of Kingston value RAM
    80GB Seagate HD
    100GB Maxtor SATA HD
    Philips DVD/CD-RW
    Sony Floppy drive
    BFG GeForce 7800GTX OC 256mb
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value sound card
    Rosewill TU-155 case w/stock 400W power supply

Any help would be more than appreciated.

Not sure if this is it, but worth a try:
Right click on "my computer", hardware tab, click on "device manager". Hit the plus besides "universal serial bus controllers". Now, if there is a yellow or red mark over any of the things listed under the USB controllers, let us know. Either way, if you right-click on the "usb root hub", click properties, click the "power management" tab, and then uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power", and restart, the problem might go away.

Also, if you run through the steps found under http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315539 , go back to "universal serial bus controllers" , you might see some "faded" entries with yellow "bangs" on them, or things listed as "unknown" devices, or "faded/ghostly" entries which look EXACTLY like items that are not faded. Right-clicking on any of these "ghosted" items and clicking on "uninstall" might also help the issue.

    Best of luck!

Just edited a second idea into my first post (not sure about that one either) which might help. Sounds like it might be something a little more complex, though...

Hopefully the smart people will have some ideas! :)

This is a long shot. Are you using a router and if so, what brand/model?

Also, why not install a NIC in your computer, instead of using a USB port for your internet access?

Why? Cause the USB port can be overloaded within the system. Pending on what you are doing.

Buying a nic is very cheap, nowadays..

Could be the box is overloaded with temp and other files all screaming for a place in the queue. Have you tried downloading and using Crapcleaner (available here at MG) - particularly after playing online games.
