Is Birdie Software a reputable vendor?

Need to convert thousands of confidential client emails from .eml and .msg into individual PDF files, without losing the file names. Shockingly, Adobe Acrobat cannot do that, so far as I can tell.

Birdie Software has a product which does this. Only question is whether it would be safe to scan confidential corporate documents, tax returns with private information, etc., using software from this vendor. Of course phoning home with a full data dump would be hard, but my guess is that data-mining the input and phoning home with the mined results would not be hard.

Opinions on whether this vendor and product can be trusted?

It's on CNET and they have a credit merchant account, but who knows whether that is any reassurance?

    The product itself (CNET):

    The vendor (CNET):

    The vendor's homepage:

I promise to +1 Thank anybody who replies. Am desperate and on a deadline!

If CNet is the only place you can download the software, I'd skip it.

I avoid downloading anything from CNet. It is not a safe site.

I can't give you a yes or no on the birdiesoftware company; I've never heard of them.

Appreciate the feedback. +1 poster, +1 MG for great justice.

Further thoughts from anybody are welcomed, of course.

    Thanks.

    Hi

I echo plodr's post on CNet, used to be ok years back before they bundled all sorts with their downloads to not checking apps for malware.

AS for Birdiesoftware again I have not used it and you can from birdiesoftware download direct from them the trials of the softwares, but weird they dont have an all in one app to cover more file types, seems expensive to buy multiple apps to convert to PDF

I just wonder if this app I use a lot at home and in work may work for you http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/dopdf.html its free and basically uses a PDF engine to utilise the Print function, so say you open and email and you choose Print, you choose DoPDF to print the email too and you gain a PDF of the email, works for virtually any format you can open and has a Print option.

Just when installing dont accept any 3rd party software like toolbars as generally free software come with a few, I do a custom install or check whats installing during the install process and its been fine for me, no unwanted addons

Thanks David. Appreciate the further suggestions. We do have a facility to print to PDF, and while this does preserve the original file name as desire, the problem is that we need to do it thousands of times, thus I don't think this is practical unless it is automated.

I bet a batch file could do the trick but it would take me a whole day just to put together something simple like that, partly eliminating the supposed savings. Just trying to do this in the most cost-effective way. Right now that looks like it may be spending $1000 on a specialized legal-industry tool that happens to have this functionality and is from a vendor of unquestionable reputation.

    Anyway many thanks (again).

+1 cheers to MG and all

(comment, I'm seeking this advice for business purposes, and I feel kind of bad. I wouldn't suggest MG roll out a pay service but I wonder whether you think I am abusing this forum since it is answered by volunteers? although FWIW with my personal MajorGeeks account I have always made efforts to be helpful responding to questions with my limited knowledge)

    Hi

That app does with files, but just tested it now with an email and it doesnt seem too unless the email has been saved, but as you say for 1000s of emails thats a PITA and time consuming.

Doesn't Acrobat Pro have a Email Portfolio option, don't know what versions that came in but worth a look as I'm sure its functionality printed emails and some attachments into a searchable printout.

Cannot think of any quick solution for you off hand apart from what you mention is that its likely a specialised piece of software.

As for your last comment, very nice of you but as your likely to know, you are not abusing the forum at all in asking your questions as never know if one of us have seen or done what a user wants and if not maybe together we can roundtable a few ideas. All help is great help.

Many thanks! I will investigate that option immediately. Cheers from a MG user of nearly 10 years. :)

Only problem is that the latest versions of Acrobat and its plugins, which is what we have, only seems to have the option to convert to a SINGLE pdf file, which will strip out the file names.

Just in case anybody is in a similar situation, I have stumbled upon the following product:

    http://www.coolutils.com/Batch-EML-Converter

Based on the appearance of the website and the fact they have a telephone support #, a good Symantec rating as a "safe site", an AMEX account, and well-written documentation, I'm inclined to regard them as a safe and reputable vendor.

Of course if anybody disagrees I would love to hear. But barring that I think we've found our solution.

Thanks for the tip. We ended up purchasing a commercial license of the Total Mail Converter Pro for $170. The company website had enough indicia of reliability that we felt comfortable enough trusting them.

Although the converter chokes on some attachment types and you'll want to save and carefully parse the log files to handle those cases manually, it massively simplified our task.

Seems perfect for small scale legal document production if you don't need or want to spend money on a full-scale discovery tool, or have one and don't want to bother firing it up for whatever reason.

    Hi

Really thanks for the update as you didnt really need to but I gained from your posts that you are contentious type of PC user and thats superb and I for one love users like you!!!

Its a bit of a layout to do but in a setting like yours you need accuracy I know as I'm in medicine and research so we need to have a document trail but ours is GOV dictated and not commercial, I always look at commercial as my dept is both GOV, Academic and Commercial, I don't care who pays me!

I just think in the long term a look back at options is needed and I know I will be looking at this as we are moving to electronic medical records soon, started in some part now as I type my own General Doctor and Patient letters up as of last week, doesn't take long but a good option to review what's been typed for a patient from any doc. If I find any new options I will let you know.

Good to know we could help.
    No abuse at all. :major
The company could show it's appreciation by making a small donation. :major
