I've heard from many people that Weatherbug is spyware.

I used to love Weatherbug, until I heard it was spyware two years ago, when then I (after going through so much shit) uninstalled it.

I liked the little bug :), and I'd like to use weatherbug again as it was much more useful than something like ForecastFox.

Is it really spyware, or were there just a bunch of nubs who didn't like Weatherbug going around and saying it was? >_>

No it's not Spyware from my understanding.

It collects the users location so it can provide localised reporting, but it doesn't relay any personal information.

The free version is ad supported, but it's unfair to classify it as Adware.

Regardless of the definition or classification, it's safe and harmless.

It is not an easy thing to answer and you will find many opinions for Weatherbug and other programs like it. Is it a real baddie....now. Does it fit under the blanket of malware.....yes. I say yes because it is add support and can cause banner adds and popups. Also it sometimes also installs other items (like MyWebSearch Toolbar) without your approval. cannot be classied as malware. In addition, when you try to uninstall it, it never seems to uninstall properly. There is always baggage left around from it. Also annoying is that it is often underhandedly installed by some vendors (like AOL) without your knowledge or approval. Much like AOL does with WildTangent (also debateble but most malware fighters and all scanners will detect it) and the same is true for Viewpoint crap from AOL too (although Viewpoint is more commonly classified as spyware).

I have used Weatherbug for ages and do not seem to have any prob with it. The $ version does away with the the advertising, I understand..

If it gives you a choice of what to install, and doesn't hide fact that it's Ad supported, I really don't see the problem (it has to be paid for somehow?).

I think users need to accept some responsibility, it's they that download and choose to install it.

I also think the terms Adware, Spyware and Malware are used too often.

Not necessarily in this context, but generally speaking.
