And have you clicked Find more search providers at the bottom left? This will take you to a web page where you can select additional engines to add. (At least that's how it worked on the two 64bit Win 7's running IE 9 that I fixed).

Tried what you had said adding 'bing' but the box pops up.
Also tried resetting the settings in Internet Options Advance then restarting the laptop, this didn't work either.

The box is supposed to popup. You need to click Find more search providers and you will get sent to a webpage.
Be patient because it takes time for the webpage to load all the tiles.
If you see nothing on the webpage but a white background, then something is wrong with your computer.

Try visiting this site http://duckduckgo.com/ and click on the IE link bottom right (this could be Firefox, Chrome, etc. if you hit the site with another browser), you should see a popup asking if you want to install DDG as a search engine.

If the install is successful, as well as being a good search engine for anyone concerned with privacy, it can also redirect your searches to Google, Bing and others.

Check the Settings link bottom right for further customizations.
