    Hey there,

I work for a small educational facility, have two querries regarding XP pro and media player 11. Microsoft home only lists upto media 10...:confused

    1) Can any tell me were to find info on how to disable the games that can be accessed over the net by media player 11.

    2) Can anyone advise how to disable the online radio.

Both these options where left as default for media player and no alterations have been made at this time. The students are strangling the training bandwidth and slowing the web for those doing legitimate searches for projects etc...

Thanks in advance for any info.

    Hello...any bodies out there...?;)

In particular, I need to disable the online content, mainly the accessing of online games and streaming of the online radio stations from within Media player.

    Hey there ~Q~

    Thanks for taking the time.

We use a linux based application called Monowall, its interface is somewhat foriegn to me - its used in our training segment which normally ticks along cause its tied down pretty tightly as far as user access..

Thanks again..Btw i did end up reading the rest of your post regarding the mouse pointer issue, if i'd done more reading I'd have done less typing..lol:-D

Hi necro, it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out how to block WMP from connecting to the net....

If you post some screen shots of the Control panel(s) i can probably point you in the right direction :)

    Hey there,

I was hoping that there was perhaps a group policy setting that may have been able to achieve this, havent had a look via gpedit yet...was just putting the question out there - to see if someone else had done this and if so how.

The firewall sounds like an option, once I get enough time to dedicate more time to learning Monowalls interface. Its freeware linux app installed by a former I.T Linux guru, it seemingly has an endless supply of menus and sub menus with the critical components in unfamiliar locals. If I could dedicate a hour solid to it, or do a bit of research online and figure out the navigation - where the important interfaces are - then this would make this objective no doubt easier.

Will see what i can do about the screen shots, the box is a dedicated firewall, unsure how to get a screen capture. Unfortunately I am not aware of the Linux platform its running on yet...Q - looks like I need to do a bit more homework.;)

    Thanks for the input:wave

Yeah i looked into it and it made my head hurt to be honest :(

I would be happy to take a look at any interface you can get to, but dont expect too much :p

If i were you i would go kidnap the linux guru and get him to sort it :p

On a serious note though, you really need to get an understanding of your firewall, or bandwidth hogs will be the least of your worries!

I hear that, this firewall apparently had no issues in the past year or so, touch wood. I definitely hear what your saying about the firewall. So far just had an overview of it - how to allow the traffic to the i.ps via a gui, learning the linux command line is going to be fun full of grubs and devs things gosh.

There are so many devices here to learn from cisco and a couple of managed switches, various routers and a network that has a variety of "cleaning requirements" from a networking standpoint. It is definitely what one would describe as an "ad hoc" network as fair as the equipment goes..pieced together as the company grew. Various I.T people with flashes of brilliance in there individual fields of expertice, then I come along and have to understand this with no former I.T to give an overview of the structure other than really a site map for the typing segment with the server and a few i.ps and that was it...welcome to my world.... although to put a positive spin its great, if not sometimes frustrating learning opportunity and a nightmare to manage..

    Hey there, as an update.

found this surfing on an unrelated matter, it may help someone at some stage, please post back to verify if this helped you or not, so others may gain some assistance from this. The info is about 1/2 way down the page.

This is for media player 11 but possibly higher as its a registry hack / entry.

To those unfamilair with registry editing, please learn how to back up and restore your registry first prior to attempting this...safety first.:p
