I can't seem to run Hijackthis.

I have followed the directions on how to unzip Hijackthis, and I believed it was in the folder.

However, I do not know how to RUN it...

I double click on it but nothing comes up, so I cannot even begin to see the log.

Does anyone have any idea why?

    Thank you

Exactly what file name (the full name) are you double clicking on?

Are you running Windows Explorer and using it to locate the file so you can double click on it?

    What OS do you have?

Why are you trying to run HijackThis? It is not a tool for inexperience users.

    Thanks for the reply.

I am trying to run Hijackthis because I have a virus of which I couldn't correct using the instructions from Sticky: READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal section.

The file name is HJT, C:/Program Files. I had followed the instructions on unzipping Hijackthis, and all seemed smooth until I tried to run it...

I am just going to my C: drive folder and clicking on the hijackthis (208kb) icon but it doesn't respond.

    I am on Windows XP.

    Sicerely,

    Grant

You did not follow the READ ME FIRST properly. See step 3 of the Getting Prepared section and follow it properly. You are clicking on a ZIP file not and EXE file. Had you followed the instructions, you would be able to see the file extension was not correct and could not execute.

You need to download and install a tool like WinZip to be able to recognize ZIP files. Then install it and unzip HJT to the proper folder as given below in my instructions for using and posting HJT logs. Do not post a HJT log if you have not completed ALL the steps in the READ ME FIRST.

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I went back again and follwed the instructions from part three.

The Hijackthis icon, first has a folder with a zipper through it (hijackthis.zip).

When I open it it turns into a box that is all white except for a blue line at the top and is titled hijackthis.exe.

When I click it, nothing happens.
