Hi, I bought my son an Inspiron 1300 for his birthday for all his homework etc. Being as stupid as I am I didn't ensure that there was any form of firewall/virus checker etc on it. He messed around with it for a few days before bringing it to me because it was stacked up with viruses. I loaded Spybot and and avg and regularly run them now but the system still is very slow and often opens web pages without any request. I would like to do a complete system restore but I don't have a system restore disc like I did with my PC, is this normal? Also do I actually need to do a system restore and if so do I need a Dell Restore disc?

Please help, I am using the computer now, but will not send emails as several friends have been infected by this computer.

    thanks

    Andy

System Restore won't help. The viruses will still be there. You need to do a clean install to successfully get rid of all of them. If Dell didn't send you a system restore disk then call them up and tell them you need it. I had to do that for my parents with their Gateway desktop. And if they tell you that they send blank disks for you to make your own restore, tell them no I paid for a license of (whatever os it has) and I need the cd to reload it. They make things tricky but you should get your disks in the mail. Let us know when you get them.

    Great,

Thanks I will give Dell a call (although that's not easy in itself as the numbers are really hard to find).

    Thanks very much,

I spoke to Dell yesterday and after at least an hour I found out that they don't do "system recovery disc" as such but I did get someone to send me the drivers and utilities disc that apparently I need to do a factory settings restore.

Meanwhile I keep getting trojan horse "LOP.BL" and "Generic3.QLS" warnings, should I try to get rid of these or just wait until I can restore the factory settings.

Have you tried running your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs in safemode? it doesn't always help but can occasionally. press f8 while your system boots to go to the boot select screen and choose safemode.

Also, if you go start -> run -> msconfig
then go to the startup tab you can edit which programs you want to load when your system boots. Don't worry about disabling something that may be important, nothing under the startup tab is necessary for your system to run. The worst you can do is disable some of the bells and whistles, and everything can be turned back on.
the same cannot be said of any of the other tabs in the msconfig menu, so unless your very comfortable making adjustments that could have adverse effects on your system, i'd leave them alone.

you cant do too much damage trying to fix your system as you will be setting it back to the factory defaults shortly anyway. best of luck.

    Hi, docmarten

Try alwil Avast 4.7 (latest so far) - during the installation it asks you if you want to run the scan during the boot - check it. So after the installation as the comp. restarts right during the boot it will start scanning the drives. In my opinion it does great work 'cause finds the viruses before they even start to work (n' get so "stealthy n' etc."). I have an experience using - it found 3 trojans on my computer even though I had eset NOD32 with the latest update. Try it n' good luck.

Something else i would suggest you do is to do a Google search on the virus that the pc says you have and see if there is a removal tool for it.. Sounds like the cd that Dell is sending you will not have the Operating System on it .. If thats the case you will need one.... Isn't there a way to create a system recovery cd? Look in the programs list and see if there is something there...

also i recommend downloading and running Smitfraudfix.exe.... It gets rid of adware.. You can get it here.. http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php and i would also download and use Spybot search and destroy.. It is another good program for getting rid of spyware and adware.. Good luck. RE: Smitfraudfix::: Read the instructions on how to use smitfraud fix before using it..

Let's start at the beginning! This is where you should have begun if you are having malware problems! Follow the steps below and we will be able to determine if you are having malware problems and what we need to do to fix them.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    Guys,

thankyou all for your help, I think I will be a regular user of this site from now on.

I spent the most of the last 3 days on the phone to dell, who although bent over backwards to try to help me, we mostly ineffective. I did find one guy who I managed to talk into helping me without incurring the 57 UK pound charge.

I now have a system restored to Dell Factory setting and am now putting on anti-virus software etc.

I am running the AVG Internet Security 7.5 trial version and have Spybot S&D. Will these two progams (I will buy the AVG if it does the job) be sufficient or should I get something else.

I guess basically I am asking what should I have on my machine to prevent me having to restoring to factory setting again?

Once again THANK YOU to all that have posted on my question.

    Doc Marten
