    Hi guys,
am requiring some help with malware on GFs laptop which runs win8.
She claims they were installed when she updated vlc or divx player and in control panel there were about 18 things installed on that day.

I tried using the remove/uninstall feature from the control panel. After what seemed success on the first few I started getting error messages and on closing the control panel I can no longer locate it.

Any attempts to install new software is met with an error message along the lines of "version not supported".

I have followed the steps in the "READ & RUN ME FIRST THREAD" and have attached what I have been able to proceed with.

Thankyou for any and all assistance, am more than happy to supply any further info required

    Kit

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Sounds like you caused some damage to Windows. You may be better off doing a System Restore to a point before the problems began and before you started doing any cleaning. If this works and brings back Control Panel, then rerun MGtools and attach a new log. Also rerun a scan with Hitman Pro and attach a new log. It would be better to try this first because removing all the junkware will not repair the damage you may have cuase to Windows. Seems your whole Uninstall Programs list is gone.

Don't do anything else on your own.

Thanks for the quick reply chaslang and for the wwarm welcome to the site.

I have followed your instructions and performed a system restore to the point prior to the malware appeared, (When I attempted to restore to the installation of the malware it came back with an error so I went to the one before that.) This brought back the control panel functions.

I have rerun CCleaner and performed the 5 scans in the READ ME again and updated the attachments.

I am still receiving a large proportion of the issues attributed to the malware.

If there is anything further I can do to assist please let me know.

    Again thankyou for your assistance

You're welcome. Okay there is alot to do so let's get started.

Uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.
    AnyProtect
    Java 7 Update 21
    MediaPlayerplus
    Optimizer Pro v3.2
    SpeedUpMyPC

Now install the current version of Sun Java from:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.search.ask.com/?o=APN10645A&gct=hp&d=406-706&v=n10249-176&t=4

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]

    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run a new scan with Hitman Pro and save a new log to attach.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXT log
    • the new Hitman Pro log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks again, will list the steps in order I proceeded (let me know if it's too much info, just trying to be helpful and accurate)

    Uninstall Programs:
    AnyProtect - successful
Java 7 Update 21 - error message "only if undo changes by Microsoft C++ 2008..." selected yes and uninstalled successfully
    MediaPlayerplus - successful
    Optimizer Pro v3.2 - successful
SpeedUpMyPC - error "...\speedupmypc\unins000.msg is missing" - unsuccessful

    Install current java - successful

    MGTools\analyse
    completed apart from 2 items:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Optimizer Pro] C:\Program Files (x86)\Optimizer Pro\OptProLauncher.exe not present
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\progra~2\optimi~1\optpro~2.dll only displayed "O20 - AppInit_DLLs:" so left unchecked

    Exited browsers, "FIxed", Rebooted

    OTM
    - downloaded, run and rebooted

    Hitman Pro
    - scan --> Ignore all --> log retrieved

    MGTools\getlogs.bat
    - run and log retrieved

    Attached
should be the 4 requested logs.

As to how things are currently:
    There are significantly less popups,
AVG is detecting adware "blockandsurf" (on investigating it was installed same time as the tools you advised and was unsure if it was needed so ignored for now).
Couple of errors on startup (which may have been fixed since last reboot, will update if this is continuing)
Generally things are a slow on startup (again will update if this is improved after next reboot)
Firefox is slow to load and accept inputs (as for previous 2 items)

Thanks again for your help, it is greatly appreciated. I will update the post once I try a few things and see if the minor issues are still coming up.

    Cheers
    Kit

(wrote a long post that must be in a queue somewhere and unsure if this will come up before or after)

After completing the steps chaslang set out for me I am getting a few different popups and adware. Some of them are in my installed programs list from the date when the problem malware first arrived and one that is new and one that has a new and an old component.

    Programs:
BlockAndSurf - showing ads on most websites and popups
Pokki - no idea what it does but an option to "add to Pooki menu" is on nearly all files (reinstalled itself 23/4)
    VO Package
    Freeven pro
    Re-markit
    suprasavings
    MyPC backup
Pokki Download Helper - installed 10/2/14

All other programs on uninstall list seem legitimate.

A "Windows Installer Version" popup still appears every now and again that seems dodgy so i just exit that. The icon is similar to the VuuPC installer previously appearing.

The python error messages are gone and things have sped up somewhat, but not to original responsiveness.

Hope this helps and sorry for any confusion if the other post is out of sequence

    Cheers
    Kit

    [purity]

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Repeatedly getting stuck with only the :Commands portion on the left screen.

Removed the following in an attempt to find out which ones were causing the problem:

Without these it ran properly (put the :command part on the end) and log reflects this version.

On trying to repeat with only the above :Reg entries, OTM froze again.

Hope this is helpful and I haven't made things harder for you.

    MGLogs\getlogs.bat
    Run and log attached.

    Perfomance
Limited use since this round of fixes but looking promising thus far.

Have lost the control panel again, can get to the individual items like "uninstall a program" but no control panel when searched in the win8 home screen.

Thanks again for all the help, very thankful and appreciate your time.

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

Okay this is a problem with Windows. You should discuss this in the Software Forum. Also see the below link:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/where-is-control-panel

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
