Ya, the forums were down too for a few minutes. I've never seen the main site go down but they're most likely doing maintenance.

I had a problem with posting and now it seems to okay.

Got an error when posting a reply (ispCP Omega Error 500 /newreply.php Internal Server Error!) and thought it was PC Firewall Tools Plus that I just installed a few minutes prior.

    Hi

Cheers for the heads up, have pinged Tim (MA) on this in case he is unaware of this, likely they do know and are working on it now, could be anything, maintanence, part of internet backbone out to a server at the datacenter crash.

    Hi Bigtrucks,

Well the hardware maybe back up but next would be re-installing software and recovering the backup database for the software listings, then some tests, so not a quick thing if wanting to do it right, so while IT WORKS! its not finished just yet.

This is a good lesson for everyone, it's not if a HDD fails, just a matter of when. Do those backups folks!;)

LOL erm... In medical terms that would be discontinuation syndrome for some.

The upcoming DSM V would probably include "internet addiction" to it's arsenal, so we still have got a few years to escape from that label until that DSM V comes out. :-D

    Thanks for the update Halo.

Good lord. I started getting 404 errors this morning around 9am, which continued every time I checked all day. After a while, the main page would simply say "It Works!", but I couldn't see anything. My former bookmark for the forums still doesn't work (same 404 error), but my former bookmark for the main page now leads directly to the forums. Which I just finally got to in order to post this (just shy of 10pm, so eleven hours I've been unable to access any part of the site).

What sucks is I just spent a bit of time yesterday posting links to various programs for people to download from here, and none of them could get in, either!

You'd think a tech site would be better able to handle something like that, no? ;) ;) ;) ;)

(Please don't miss the sarcasm...crap happens even to the best of us. ;))

We are updating popular stuff, looking for a more current backup, but we will be back from 6 months to 2 years and will be playing catchup 12 hours a day or more for weeks. Oh well.

ok I don't get it. I logged on from my bookmark with no probs. have been surfing around the forum all afternoon & night no probs but I see several others were not able to. If memory serves me right this sight was having a problem with signatures with certain ones they couldn't see their own sigs but I could, could that have been the start of this situation? Just curious and kind of confused.

That's what I thought, since I've got several links of MG bookmarked, one of them the forums.

Thank you for all the trouble in fixing it. Hard work ahead huh?

PS: had a bit of trouble getting into the forum this morning though. No idea what caused it.

Not that I haven't redone my bookmark to get to the forums, but this is the one I was using (the bookmark I saved when I first started coming here however many years ago):
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/vb/index.php

It doesn't go anywhere except to a 404 error still.

The one I found after the main site was back is this:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/

No big deal, obviously, just an FYI in case it matters.

I hate to be a pain, but I just clicked on the old link above and got the same thing. Obviously we've all found the forums again, so it's NOT a huge deal. Feel free to tell me to shut up since there is a different link to use. :-D

Use this link as default http://forums.majorgeeks.com/ as its direct to forum index, cannot remember using the vb/index.php link for a while now. The one you're using may take a while to filter around DNS servers possibly, but the link I use is best IMO.

  42. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

That was my point...I'm using the second link I provided above, which is the one you posted. But the first link I provided, which is the one I've used for years, no longer works since the crash. And since CP said it was fixed and it isn't, I thought I'd mention that.

It's all good, I'm obviously here without a 404 error. I just thought it was possible I'm not the only one who has been here for years using the same (now) bad bookmark. :)

May I ask a perhaps stupid question?

Some of the software download links on the majorgeeks.com site do not work properly. Will that be because those files are yet to be restored correctly? I could not get the internode link to download at all either of the programmes that I was interested in trying. So I ended up downloading them from the author's sites rather than the internode one.

No biggie really - thanks Admins I know your swamped at present. :cool

    Hi Paramonks

Yes indeed, some applications have old date in the title of release and the various links maybe broken on some but in general click the Authors Link and you should be fine, maybe slower as internode is good for you Aussies and as you'll apprieciate their are many thousands of apps for Tim and Jim to go through and they are working hard to get us back upto date, and doing a grand job of it so far.

Just bare with us and we will be back to fighting strenght soon.

Here's what I would like to know, and am too lazy to read all the posts to see if it's been answered....-D

If the site was down, how were you able at that time to come in here and post that error message saying the site was down if the site was indeed down?

Also, if the site was down and you started a thread saying it was down, which now seems like an impossibility, then how could anyone else read a thread on the site being down if the site was down?

Sorry to sound all George Carlin, but just wondering. lol

  46. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

    Hi

:) should have read the whole thread, as the topic is the main Majorgeeks.com downloads site and not the forum which is on a seperate server so not affected in what was a bit of a freak occuance that you never expect, both the main HDDs and the backup HDDs crashed, thus taking out the whole downloads area.

Hence folk could post on the forum.

    majorgeeks.com ~ main site
    forums.majorgeeks.com ~ forum

    both on seperate servers.

    Hello Halo

Thank you for the reply. Information that the Admins perhaps will find of interest is that after 7pm in the evenings here in Victoria (in particular) the internode download link is slower than a snail, so I in fact prefer to use the USA or Authors links for downloading.

Yes I fully appreciate the fabulous work they do, and I try to remember and tell them so on a semi-regular basis, I wasn't grumbling (honest). :-o
