Windows 8 "activation error"

A few months ago, I installed a fresh OEM copy of Windows 8 Pro 64 on a client's PC. It was/is a Genuine copy. The activation code was entered (as required) at the beginning of the install and the PC gave me no activation errors when finished. I also downloaded and paid the extra $10 for the Media Player upgrade from Microsoft.

After the client ran the 8.1 upgrade himself (Microsoft download), the PC started showing the build version in the bottom right corner of the desktop and the "Activate Windows" screen popped up. Even though the activation screen shows a license code is installed (example: "xxxxx-ABCDE"), it still states the copy of Windows is unactivated.

I tried the "Refresh Everything Without Affecting Your Files" option and things got even stranger. A message popped up stating that files were missing and to insert the Windows 8 DVD. When I inserted the original Windows 8 DVD, it said it could not verify the media. I tried using a Genuine Windows 8.1 disc with the same results.

The details I get from the error code state it is an "unknown activation error" and Microsoft's website offers no help on correcting it. A full scan with AVG revealed no virus/malware issues.

Again, this is a legit. copy of Windows. At this point, it looks like I'm going to have to do a fresh install from DVD and hope the OEM activation code will work again.

I suggest that you call Microsoft regarding the activation errors.

It could be a version mismatch, but then that would not explain it working before the upgrade to 8.1

As the others have rightfully stated, this Microsoft territory, let them deal with it.
After all, that is part of the reason you pay them so much to use their software.

 

Question that has to be asked. Where did you get the windows DVD?
