    For windows XP home:

Select the folder you wish to encrypt.
Right-click the folder and click Properties.
    Click the Sharing tab.
Check the box, 'Make this folder private'

If the box is greyed out....check these requirements:
The hard disk drive must be formatted in NTFS and not FAT32.

The folder you're attempting to password protect must be in your own personal folder. For example, if your name is bob, you must be encrypting a folder that is or that is contained within the below folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\

It is always a good idea to backup the folders that you intend to password protect beforehand, just in case you forget the password!

If you need to password protect files and/or folders that you do not frequently use, one of the simplest ways is to compress the folder and files with a compression utility and password protect the compressed file. However, each time you wish to work or modify the files you will need to uncompress the files using the password.

    Regards....

Excellent response thanks. My "Private box" is greyed out - so I presume this is because its formatted in FAT32. Are there any other consequences of changing to NTFS ? Im terrified of messing around too much as using a comressed folder with password protection will do the trick if the NTFS option is either complicated or risky:)??

    Any advice appreciated:)

There's a very good thread about changing from FAT32 to NTFS. How to do it, why to do it, why not to do it. Plus other less relevant stuff. It's at this:
