Now I am scared. MS must be counting on Bing integration / advertising to make $$ off the Win 10 release.

Heh, I'll still upgrade to 10, since it is free. If it wasn't free, I'd still get it. Looking forward to the CP (consumer preview) build of it.

For the first year after release only. Welcome to Windows as a Service.

It works great for Office 365, I can see it working for Windows too.

Due to the website crashing, I am on a waiting list for Microsoft BUILD 2015. That said, it is expected that developers will be getting this when attending. We are already scheming on what we are going to develop for it.

Not free for 1 year but a free upgrade WITHIN the first year of the OS's release. After the year is over those who haven't upgraded yet will have to pay to upgrade.

    Isn't that what i said?

I will also change, DX12 will have features all gamers will want. I am sure the unwanted "features" can be disabled like all other Windows releases.
"Windows as a Service" AKA "Windows Rental"?

Microsoft have not really relied on Windows sales, as its Office that is the core revenue maker, followed by Server OS (actually really good OSes are Windows Server over Linux IMHO) and the next up is Xbox. Windows doesn't make alot as in general its sold via OEM hardware as in HP, DELL, ACER etc PCs and not mostly from boxed versions.

The users who will pay $300 for Boxed Retail Windows is not that many, sort of going of Win XP, Vista, 7 and 8 Pro prices. Much easier to get a OEM PC with the OS included.

Yes Bing and MSN advertising will bring in many $$$ as does why Google survives.

  11. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

That implies they will take it away from when you stop paying, which isn't the case.

We will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified new or existing Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year!

Maybe I missed it but don't say what they consider a qualified device to be?

Them thar things would be referring to tablets and phones.

You mean the square thingys that you touch and them funny letters appears on screen? I got me one of each of them contraptions. :-D

I guess more specifically I mean qualified as in regards to phones, I though updates were dependent on the carrier.

  15. Adrynalyne

International unlocked versions are free of carrier influence.

I think mine is unlocked, I'm not entirely certain. Guess I'll just wait and see.

The interesting query is can you still dual boot your old OS, despite "upgrading"?

Or, is your license key converted and it's game over...

  21. theefool

    theefool Geekified

As of now, it is an upgrade of your currently installed OS, so no dual boot. Unless you have two dual boot ....

Who even dual boots anymore, why not just use vmware player/workstation and run from that?

Yes, there are benefits to dual boot, I have found none, but there are those who do, the upgrade will be for just one.

Also, those who stated software as a service, I think they (Microsoft) first thought of that back in 2000. I remember reading about it around 15 years ago.

  22. theefool

    theefool Geekified

So, really software as a service cheaper price, pay per year, or pay for full price, and not pay per year. Sounds like Software Assurance.

I want to install it again so bad but I am working on a current project that needs kiosk mode, and that was utterly broken last Windows 10 build.

So unless you can test it for me, I'm stuck on 8.1 :(

When you think about it, SaaS is a better deal for someone who upgrades often.

    Take Office 365:

You get the latest upgrades and the install is always the latest with updates
You get multiple installs and can deauthorize them when moving them to different machines
You get multiple platforms installers for no additional cost

I wonder how companies that stay a ways behind current updates will cope with Windows 10. I know a few companies here in Silicon Valley that have a whole section of IT checking updates prior to rolling them out. Some updates get out quickly, some never get implemented. We are talking extreme tech companies working on the bleeding edge that cannot afford any leaks. USB disabled, no wi-fi and a ton of other isolating policies all in the name of security.

  29. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

The SaaS component of Windows 10 does not apply to bug fixes and security updates. It applies to new and updated features.

  30. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Well, vmware workstation 10 was not quite compatible with this new version, so I upgraded to 11, and now it is running like a champ. I will look at the kiosk mode, since that is something I'm interested in myself. We recently switched from regular fax machines to a fax appliance and we have a few that just need to fax and that is it. Anyway, I'll check to see how just running calc is in kiosk mode, just give me a bit to look into this.

  31. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Still looking, I can close calc, and it reopens, but I still have access to everything else, I'll continue with this project.

Is Print Preview back as a default or are we still not up to XP standards with 10?
Printing is a BIG reason my office never even looked at 8. Getting things to print right in 7 was bad enough. Especially hard to explain after XP made it so easy by setting Print Preview to pop every time you printed.

  33. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

That is controlled per app now, at least in 8.1. I get previews fine in apps that matter to me(web browsers, MS Office apps).

Windows 7 and Windows 8.x collectively run on well over half of the world's Windows PCs, meaning that a wide swath of existing Windows users will be able to make the jump to Windows 10 free of charge.

I noticed today on my Surface that WU is offering Win10 Technical Beta, and ticked as default (guess it could be as I have signed up as Windows Insider) but I dont like the fact its ticked as default which could catch out some users on their production PCs.

    Bit of a U2 iTunes moment ;)

  37. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Eh, I check before I blindly print. But that is not the case of everyone that I work with.

  38. DOA

    DOA MG's Loki

That is my point, theefool. Many programs cannot be set up to show Preview as default since XP's demise and some don't have preview at all.
Then there is Windows Photo Viewer that has a nice preview but the scaling can be magically changed between the screen and the printer. I have posted on Win7 forums and this is not considered a bug. it is the price of diversity.
I am hoping Win 10 upgrades back the XP usability.

  39. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Blame the app developers. It is up to them to implement it.

Even my first java coded app ever has print preview.

  40. DOA

    DOA MG's Loki

I agree Adry, it is the app dev's blame.
But it the easiest fix is from MS, ultimately they can force print preview and IMO should do exactly that.

How does the free upgrade thing work?

I have Windows 7 but its a OEM version. Does this mean then i would have to pay for Win 10?

  42. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

No. It means you can upgrade online for the first 12 months of its release.

More will come out nearer the time of release, as to hardware, whether OEMs are included, as nice * note to the free comment HERE and signup to a heads up email HERE on news of Windows 10 release and free upgrade terms and conditions.

AS with all things Microsoft they can change nearer release date, but I can see this one sticking to gain some good will back from end users.

I just hope there is just Windows 10 Home, Pro, and Enterprise. Not that Ultimate part. Though, I did buy Vista Ultimate and 7 Ultimate. I wonder if N is staying or not

Over at the Wintenforums they have a few Microsoft "vision" videos.
I keep getting the feeling they are like US generals still fighting WWII. They have very advanced ideas, but they have not made the leap to the future.
Where is the fully implemented voice, eye control, "clicks" thought sensing?
These things are here now and hopefully the interface of the future. Look at a spot on the screen, think or speak what you want there. Not the manual interface of Microsoft "Visions".
People are not buying new hardware because the extra speed does nothing for them. An order of magnitude speed increase in the UI would make them want to change.

Home, Pro, Enterprise? Who cares; give us the future.

Just clicked on this thread and this kind of made me laugh...not in the sense that I disagree. Just in the sense that people are still fighting to keep XP. I doubt the majority could handle the future. :-D

  47. DavidGP

I agree with you on future tech is here now, but the sad fact is the move to future ideas and ideas on how to control a PC just stem with users not wishing to embrace the future! It all comes back to the comments of "It never used to be like this is Windows XP" or "I want the Start menu back", sad thing is the start menu is a dinosaurous [sic]

I totally agree with you on the UI, even the Star Wars and Star Trek ideas of communicating with PCs are here now, voice control is good and getting better, touch... well a sticky one as folk are fixated with it being for mobiles and tablets, touch screen PCs are easy to use, but I think another few years before users start to adopt, due to cost, and the problem of grubbyass fingers on said screens.

Weird bit on touchscreens is tablets are starting to get towards small monitor sizes now.

Personally I think Windows 10 is going to be a failure as its no different to Windows 7, but if Microsoft take a huge chance (Win8 for instance) they get lambasted by amateur article writers and thus the flock follow in criticising the new OS.

Damned if you do change and damned if you don't, not a great tech future we have really at present.

  48. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Honestly, they should just do Home and Enterprise.

  49. DOA

    DOA MG's Loki

Rather than "Home" and "Enterprise" how about letting us choose features. Like a car, some want certain options, others don't. Although you would need packages for the ignorant it would be nice to build a Windows feature set custom tailored to my company needs.
I think most of our trouble with future tech is not the want to stay with older tech, but that future tech tends to be launched as beta. The mouse was adopted pretty fast and it was radical at its introduction. Inserting the cursor between letters rather than on a letter was accepted quickly, etc.

  50. theefool

    theefool Geekified

I was like this when the mouse got implemented. I was like, how the heck do I use this thing. Okay, I got this. Scroll mouse wheel, what?!?! Okay, I'm good with this.

    Shows my age I guess.

New ways to interact with the computer is always good. But, in my mind I can't grasp it beyond keyboard and mouse. Especially with my users who deal with CAD or GIS applications. Or 911/dispatch stations.
