    Okie-dokie, I'm stuck.

I haven't set up an Internet connection in years. I just bought my honey a new notebook computer and it has built-in Wi-Fi. I am able to get to the router and there is plenty of signal. I set up the password, the IP addy, subnet mask, default gateway, etc., but there is no actual Internet connection when I click on IE.

I have Earthlink DSL and my PC is the master unit with my FIL's computer running wireless to my router. We both have very sufficient connectivity.

What in the heck am I missing? Do I have to install some ISP software to get this thing to work?

There should be a icon by clock for wireless. rt.click icon, click on view wireless con.If you if you click on the connection you want it should hi lite then click on connect in that box.
If you don't have icon go to network connections in control panel.
    hope this helps

I have great signal and I am already connected. I have 54 mbps showing. What I don't have is the ability to get on the Internet. I tried HP support but the woman in India said it was a router issue and to call them. How it can be a router issue when I have full connectivity is beyond me and I tried to explain that to her to no avail.

The router log shows that the notebook is, and has been, connected. The notebook shows that it is connected. I still cannot get on the Internet, however.

Do I need a client or something? I do not have a client on my PC which is the master unit where the router is connected. The DSL we have is provided through Earthlink. Do I have to install Earthlink on the notebook? It isn't installed on the master PC.

Im have never had any issue in getting on the Internet before. It simply always worked.

What happens when you click on internet explorer in the start menu.

Same thing. Tried HP support again but they insist that this is a router/network problem so I will try the router support today.

    OKAY!!!! The thing works now.

It seems that while the default channel for the router is number 6, and they tell you to leave it there, the correct channel is number 11. This lyin' sack o' s--- tells you that you are connected but you actually aren't.

    I have a D-Link DI-524 btw.

    Problem solved.

    Thanks, guys.
