Cannot get to Desktop in Safe Mode

First time poster! Thanks in advance for any help.

When I boot up, McAfee Virus Scan tells me there is a PUP Found - C:\Windows\System32\gebyw.dll. It asks me to remove it but I can't. Through researching this on the web, I believe I have a Vundo virus.

I have downloaded some instructions on how to remove this but it requires that I go into Safe Mode. However, Windows and my desktop does not show when I go to Safe Mode. I only have a black screen indicating Safe Mode in the 4 corners. I can ctl-alt-delete to bring up Task Manager but I still can't get my desktop to show. This is preventing me from doing anything to remove this virus/spyware.

Please help! I am running Windows XP Professional. I am willing to try to remove this virus myself (as of now) but I just need to get into Safe Mode.

Please follow the steps below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:

Post back in this thread. I am requesting that it be moved to the Spyware Specific Forum

Don't worry about running the scans in Safe mode if you can't get to safe mode
