I am trying to make my 1st website, I noticed this thread by happyhibby:-
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=123759

I have got Xara Webstyle 3 and Incromedia Website 4, but both dont seem right for me. I decided to give Wordpress a go as you all reccomended it. So ive downloaded it and now Im stumped on how to install the damned thing!

Ive domloaded and unzipped it and read the Read me HTML file, it tells me to open this php file and add my own settings! Im pretty limited in my computer knowledge so I could really use some advice on what i need to change here. I have attached the afore said php file as a txt file.

    View attachment wp-config-sample.txt

    Thank you ;)

All the lines that start off with // are comment lines. Everything that comes after // on a line is a comment.

It seems to me, based on reading the documents so far and never having used these but used similar config files, that it's asking for the details for your MySQL database, such as if they're on a website, supplying your username and password for the site.

    Could be wrong.

Are you using MySQL at all? Are you using this locally or hosted on a website?

Im not sure if im on mySQL as i dont even know what that is sorry:(

Im going to be hosted at virginmedia when I make a site, thats why i need to install this!

This should be easier, is there no similar software simpler to set up if no one can help with this? i want a site of about 4 or 5 pages, blog, pictures, links, arcade(miniclip games) and thats it for now although as I learn i want to build on that.

    thanks ;)

You have to install the software on your host unless you set up an Apache/PHP/SQL server on your computer. Wordpress isn't a windows application, it's a web program/script.

The hosting from your ISP is not going to give you an SQL database so you will not be able to use Wordpress. You will have to purchase a real web host such as http://www.bluehost.com/ or http://www.dreamhost.com

If you go to http://wordpress.com/signup/ you can sign up for an account and they will give you your own blog hosted on their site. That's another option, but you will have to use their domain. The upside is you won't have to install the software yourself, but you also won't be able to modify it as well/easily if you ever wanted to start playing with the coding.

If you google free Blogging services you will also find Blogger.com, etc. If that's something you're interested in check that out.

MySQL is a database that can be used on websites.

You might be best to learn some basic html and then use this site to check your code:

    http://validator.w3.org/

There are some really good sites for learning html - these are a couple:
    http://www.yourhtmlsource.com/
    http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/

If you can use the code on this forum that uses these symbols, [ and ] you are partway to learning html already.

You would be able to sign up for a free blog somewhere - Google free and blog and see what you can find. It would then just be a simple matter of putting a link to your blog site. But check first to see what tools your ISP provides - some provide tools and/or tutorials and some provide nothing but the space.

If you want to set up a free and simple HTML page download:
    http://www.nvu.com/download.php

It will give you a graphical user interface much like Microsoft Frontpage to make pages and save them as html documents. Save the document as index.htm or index.html and upload it to your host.

You'll have to manually add dates, link images, etc. But the program will help you do all that.
