Hi there, I have been a long time lurker on the forums and finally registered due to a very recent infection. After reading through what's involved I realized I better get some help.

My browsers (Firefox and Chrome) started redirecting Google searches and after further investigation I discovered that Microsoft Security Essentials and Firewall had been disabled and could not be restarted. Not sure if this is related or not but I have also had recent issues with my display driver flaking out and causing the screen to go black and problems with explorer not allowing me to delete files because 'they are open in another program'.

I run Windows update weekly and keep Security Essentials updated and running all the time. I don't torrent and don't open fishy emails. The only two things I can remember doing over the last few days are installing a new version of dBpoweramp downloaded from the source and installing a flash update that popped up (wondering if this was the one).

Part of me just wants to wipe everything and reinstall Windows, which is fine, but I want to make sure I don't drag any junk along with my personal files, media, etc when I do. Any precautions I should take with a reinstall?

I followed the Malware removal guide and have attached the logs. I appreciate any advice and guidance you have to give.

    Thanks,
    Sean

Please download ComboFix to your desktop. Run it, but do not do anything while it is running. Attach the log when it is finished.

It looks like Combo cleaned the infection, but to be sure run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Attached is the MGlogs.zip.

So far it looks good. Browsers aren't redirecting and Windows Firewall has reactivated. The only issue I have run into so far is I can't start Security Essentials. I can open the control panel but when I try to restart service it says:

"The specified service does not exist as an installed service."

    I'm assuming I just need to re-install.

Thanks for the help, really appreciate it. Is there anywhere I can send a beer money donation?

Looks good. Yes, you will probably need to uninstall MSE and after running CCleaner, re-install it.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
