Been aiming to ask about Folding@Home for a while. I noticed something about it here on Major Geeks a good while back and thought about doing it. I did a search here on Major Geeks for Folding@Home and the dates for post are from a while back. I was wondering if there is still a MG team doing this? It seems like a good cause but I know nothing about it or what is needed to do it. Anyone here doing it and care to enlighten me?.

Hi katkat. As far as I know, MGs does not have a team for this anymore. I may be wrong and someone may come and correct me. Offhand, I think Fred_G has been involved in Folding and may be able to give you some info.

When forum consolidation was done, that was one of the forums that was deleted since it was for the most part inactive.

Folding @ Home is now no more, is an old project and we ate Majorgeeks got in at the start and added a lot of computing power to this project, its slowed of late and other projects have cropped up. Don't think Majorgeeks is participating in any big one at present.

    F@H is https://folding.stanford.edu/

Distributed Computing is something that will help science and medicine a lot, so maybe think of a project we can follow and gain some members from the forum to join.

There are actually 18 active folders on the MG team. We don't really have any structure to the team, it's just that the points are accrued to the team if you specify the number (12072) in your original set up and configuration.

The folding arena has changed mightily since the start when there were single processor machines. The folding architecture now leans more to video card folding and multi-processor server hardware for the biggest "points" tally.

I have been out of it for a couple of years now so I can't really say what hardware is the best but any work you do helps out the science.
Go for it if you want.

Search using the NavBar and you will find many F@H threads.

Something I set aside myself a few years ago, albeit a worthy cause.

folding at home was one of the ways i "met" most of these guys. Between that and answering questions when i had the time.

Now that i have a real job ive gone off the radar way too long lol

I have a Win7 desktop that just sits idle most of the time because I use my laptop most. Was thinking about putting it to use and considering Folding at Home although it is new territory for me.. Thanks for the info.

Well even at stock speeds, folding generates quite a bit of heat as your processor will be pushed to 100% usage. Buying an aftermarket heatsink such as the cheap and famous Cooler Master Hyper 212 and it's many flavors will keep your heat in check.

Heat can be monitored by many software programs such as coretemp, or HWmonitor.

I should also mention that the heat is electricity being burned and your electric bill will reflect that.

With that being said, if you still wish to push your desktop to it's limits, alot of usefull information can be found on the F@H support forum.

and we can always use more folders for the team whether the team is still sanctioned or not.. it's the science that matters :)
