   This is probably a very naive question, but I've always wondered why programme installation nearly always suggest installing to "c:/programmes/xxx" instead of into their own directory. Is there a sound reason?

   Yes, there is a sound reason. By installing programs into the program directory segregation ends, pollution wanes and life is easier. It's basically for the user's convenience. Nothing Special.
