Quick question, my device manager lists my processor as an "AMD Processor Model Unknown". In the properties window it lists the processor as a K8 processor.

I remember K8 from the 939 sockets, but i thought the 940 sockets were AM2. Are both 939 and 940 socket processors considered K8?

Well, you're kind of right. The AM2 socket has the same number of pins as a socket 940, but the pin-out is different. Meaning an AM2 chip will not fit in a s940 board, and vice versa. Here's some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_940 I did a bit of research about the K8 designation, and it appears that the K8 signifier covers AMD chips of many sockets, from the 754, the 939 and the 940 families. I may be wrong, but I think all AMD64 chips are K8's. This does not include the FX series, or the X2 series. For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athlon_64

thanks a million, fortunately for me my processor is x2, and my socket is am2, so im covered. down side is that my mother board has been beeping at me, and now it beeped twice.

1's a list of possibilities, 2 beeps=time for a new board. i guess thats what happens when lightening hits outside of your house.
