Every Tab in Chrome says unable to Connect to the Internet

I believe I have some type of computer virus that is preventing me from using my Chrome browser.

The problem: This all started 2 days ago on Friday evening 9/12/14. If I try to use Google Chrome, no matter what website I try to visit I get the page with the dinosaur that says "Unable to connect to the internet." I can still play games on the internet and use Internet Explorer, so it seems to only be affecting Chrome - that I can tell.

I went through all of the steps of the virus removal process and will attach the necessary logs below. Right after completing all of the scans my Chrome browser worked until I left my computer (I either put it to sleep or in hibernate mode) and when I came back to it later it wouldn't work again.

Probable cause: I was trying to find a pdf of a college book and after downloading some file my Chrome stopped working. I attempted to delete all of the files it had put on my laptop to no avail. This is possibly the website I tried to download from, but I could be wrong: http://www.2shared.com/document/yREpiY8H/probabilitystatistics_and_rand.html

Let me know if I need to provide any more information.

I appreciate any help, I really don't like using Internet Explorer and will have to download Firefox if things can't be fixed.

    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXT log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Chaslang,

Thanks for the quick reply. My schedule is fairly crazy Monday through Thursday so my responses may be slightly delayed.

I am attaching the logs below. Google Chrome still does not function properly and says it cannot connect to the internet no matter what website I attempt to load. I haven't noticed anything else getting affected on my laptop though - whether that is a good sign or bad.

Let me know if I'm missing anything in this reply or need to do anything else.

    Thanks,
    MThor

Okay then this is probably not a malware problem. There wasn't anything real serious in your logs and IE works. So Chrome may be broken or you could even have blocked it in your firewall somehow ( check you firewall ). Also you can try the below

    Reset Chrome to Defaults

If that does not help then I suggest that you uninstall Chrome and then reboot ( don't skip the reboot ). Then you can try reinstalling.

    Chaslang,

Well I appreciate you trying to help me. Hopefully this thread can be helpful for others in this situation but Google Chrome still won't work after checking my firewall and doing the uninstall - reboot method. I guess I can't use Chrome forever on this laptop now?

I guess I have one more unrelated problem if to ask about, but I realize that you are helping others if you can't answer it, but I am not able to create new folders anywhere. Installing a new program can create its own, but I have to copy and paste and rename folders. This has been happening for probably over a year. I didn't know if you have heard about this and know a quick thing to do that could resolve it or not. Does it have to do with me being almost out of storage n my HDD (it's a 500GB drive with 41GB free)?

    Thanks,
    MThor

    You're welcome.

Okay, although neither of these problems are due to malware, let's try a couple things. First I want you to uninstall Chrome and do not reinstall it yet. Just wait until I tell you to reinstall. So uninstall it right now before going any further and then use Internet Explorer to continue.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished. If it does not then reboot it yourself.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Question: Who installed Covenant Eyes and is it really needed? I have seen some mention of it possibly interferring with Chrome.

    Chaslang,

I have run the Windows Repair and attached the MGlogs. I have not reinstalled Chrome yet, would you like me to do that? Also, I installed the Covenant Eyes software which has made note of some activity with 2shared and myfiletransfer in the past week and I have not gone to those sites. I don't intend to uninstall it unless you think it vitally necessary.

    Regards,
    MThor

    Chaslang,

So it seems Google Chrome still doesn't work. I even turned my firewall off and tried but it still says it is "Unable to connect to the internet." I also tried to check the setting on my Gateway (I have router/modem combo) but nothing is specifically blocked in its settings either. I also still can't make new folders, but I understand that is a different topic than the original post and this is on your own time. So if you aren't trying to fix that as well that is ok.

I'm really sorry this is taking so long. I appreciate your time and effort though.

Okay then since neither of these problems are due to malware, I suggest that you post in the Software Forum. ( That is assuming that it is only Chrome that cannot connect. ) I still wonder if something in CovenantEyes could be causing this.

    Chaslang,

Ok I will make a post in those forums. Do I need to mention what all we have done here to try and fix it like post a link to this thread so they can read through it?

Also, should I continue through the last steps of the Malware Removal process and hide the extra folders, change my settings back, etc.?

    I really appreciate your help.

    Yo're welcome.

It wouldn't hurt to do so.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
