I am setting up our home network. The desktop is XP pro, the laptop is XP home. We have a new laptop working through a new D-link router. The desktop is plugged in to the router WAN port. I can get on the internet just fine with both the laptop and desktop. My problem is I cant share the USB printer that is on the desktop. I have gone through the wireless set up wizards many times, went through the printer sharing wizard till I cant see straight.

The problem starts when I try to find the shared printer. The laptop cant see the desktop at all. I can ping the laptop from the desktop no problem. When I try to ping the desktop from the laptop I get "time out" "failed" etc.

    What can I do?

What model of D-Link router do you have?

Where is your cable modem hooked into the router?

The router is a D-link DI-525 ver D1. The cable modem is a Motorola SB5120 hooked in to the,,,,, wait a minute...... the Surfboard goes in to the WAN port and the desktop goes in to the #1 WLAN port. Sorry about that. Double checked and this is how it is. I was wrong about that in the first post.

    OK.

Can you ping the gateway address from the laptop? Are both machines using DHCP?

Perform an ipcongig /all from both machines and post the results here.

    BTW....I can't find a DI-525 D-Link router on the D-Link site.

Turn off the firewall on the network connections on both machines.

I can ping the router from the laptop and ping it from the desktop if that is what you mean.

In the connection status window they both say Address Type: Assigned by DHCP

This is the ipconfig /all for the desktop:

I tuned windows firewall off on both and tried to ping them. The laptop still got the "request timed out" and didnt work. It did work from the desktop to the laptop like it has been.

BTW with the windows firewall selected off It still showed the firewall ON. Probably because of the McAfee I am using.

I turned McAfee firewall off then as well. We might be on to something. Now the laptop got a good ping from the desktop. 4 packets sent, 4 received.

But I cant very well leave my firewalls off.

I went back to the "add a printer" section with the desktop firewalls both off and the printer installed, and printed wireless from the laptop. So then I turned the windows firwall back on and left the McAfee firewall off and was still able to print from the laptop. I turned the McAfee firewall back on and no print. So there, the problem is in the McAfee firewall. Any ideas about what to do with that?

Man you have been a big help!

You can't run two firewalls or anti-virus apps at the same time. You found out the hard way.

Try only running with the McAfee firewall on.

I just tried that. No ping with the McAfee on. I wonder if there is a way to have the McAfee allow the laptop to pass through the firewall?

If I leave the McAfee firewall turned off and have the windows firewall on the laptop gets a good ping from the desktop. Is the windows firewal good enough to have on by itself, without the McAfee firewal on?

I would opt for the McAfee firewall over the Windows one. In the McAfee security center or whatever they call it, there is a setting for trusted networks. You may have to poke around a little...even go the the McAfee site and explore their FAQ's. All you do is enter your home network subnet (ex. 192.168.1.0 or 10.10.10.0 etc.) into the table and the firewall will be turned off for only the subnets that appear in the table. (assuming the subnets you enter can be trusted :) ) I don't profess to know all versions of McAfee or Symantec but I have seen and used this option in the later versions of both companies software.

That took care of it. McAfee had a place in the firewall settings to allow access to the laptop's IP address.

    I cant thank you enough.
