I've been lokking for a way to convert URL's / Hosts name like www.majorgeeks.com to IP addresses like 74.86.201.220, as well as Software, Hardware forums, etc., to speed up Internet lookups.

It is apparent that you cannot convert Forums unfortunately.
If you load in http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21 for the Software Forum, the converter program does not succeed.

Check out http://www.hcidata.info/host2ip.cgi for a site that will convert Hosts names to IP addresses and vice versa.

Is anyone out there using their HOSTS file to find addresses, rather than the usual use of blocking certain sites?

    Go to http://www.hcidata.info/host2ip.cgi

Bump. Am trying to delete the other (double) post   so as not to confuse things too much.

Still interested in getting answers, though. :-D

    I use URL Discombobulator
    http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptlookup.asp
and to figure out who owns the website in question, I use another Tool of her's called Whois. Her programs are small, free and do the job. She also allows you to download the code so you can look at the program.

Thanks plastidust and plodr, for your replies. :cool I am happy with the program that I linked to in #1 post.

I am curious to know if anyone is building up a custom HOSTS file with items added to speed up lookups, and if it works, and is worth the effort? :-D Bazza

I'm trying to think of how to be a little scientific about it.... :-D

You can get your public IP address, and then perform a WHOIS on that to get your DNS server host names.

    With that, you could run:

    Code:
    tracert [I]dns.server.hostname[/I]
To see the speed of traffic between each hop, or you could run:

    Code:
    ping -t [I]dns.server.hostname[/I]
To get a sense of how quickly you can communicate with your DNS servers overall.

Hmmmm....wonder what the average size of a NS query is. There's also the variable of how many NS records you have in your hosts file and DNS cache... this could be a tough one to determine :-D

I've been using http://www.OpenDNS.com as my DNS server instead of whatever the web would throw at me on any given access attempt. IDK if it has speeded things up much for me but I don't think it has hurt either. It frequently gives help with mistyped URLs too (suggests some URLs I may have intended). Not bad for free. Easy to try and easy to dump if you decide it's not for you.
