can a virus be transferred to a cd-r. I have a virus on a laptop and need to backup files and wondered if i could just burn those items to a cd-r and transfer to another computer without infecting the other computer.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks!

    Yes, it can.

You can use CD/DVDs --- but not knowing what infection was detected, take these precautions:

*Do not back up any executable files. This includes programs that you have downloaded since any of them could be infected. it is not just files with an EXE extension. It is every file considered to be an executable ( like: .avi, .com, .bin, .dat., .exe, .pdf, .mov, .mpg....etc. Anything that can cause something to execute. Even image files have sometimes carried the infection.)

*DO NOT run anything on these CD/DVDs until at least you have run full anti-virus scans on them. You could also try using some of the Online Scanners mentioned in the below links to scan your backups and get secondary opinions.

    Using BitDefender Online Scan
    ESET Online Scanner
HouseCall - Free Online Virus Scan
